Ultimate coyote round.

I`m not getting them, but in all fairness, it could just be the computer here.........It`s in one of those places.......:(

Once watched a guy hit one at a good distance with a 416 Barrett, that was pretty ultimate in it's own right!!!

Photobucket is back up so here you go.

left to right
223AI, 22-250AI, 22-243 Middlestead, 220swiftAI, 22X55 Swede, 22-06AI

243AI, 6X55 Swede, 6-06AI, 6WSM, 6MachIV, 257WSM

And just for poops and giggles a 6mm RUM and a 257 Rum and a 223AI for reference

My two favorite subjects.... coyotes and wildcats. Because for me... the only good coyote killed, is a dead coyote shot with a wildcat cartridge at any distance over 500 yds... I don't even move my turrets until it's past 450 yds.

My 20-250AI shooting berger 55's... at a lowly speed of 3770 fps... and my 22-234AI shooting horny 80 vmax at a lowly speed of 3558 fps... will be getting another chance at some long range coyotes in a couple of weeks, when I head West for my annual month long coyote hunting of spot and stalk.... only calling occasionally... just enough to make them expose themselves.

Both rifles will shoot faster... but accuracy is a price to pay. Last year I rolled over a coyote at 631 yds with the 20-250 AI, berger 55's. It's a killing machine for sure... it will group inside a cigarette pack at 600 yds all day long... most days anyways....LOL.

I do love the idea of the 257...WOW... what an AWESOME CALIBER.

Dean... you've done it again....I mean... starting everyone's heads to spinning...LOL.

I have been using anything I can get mostly Winchester, 270 brass is better than 300 no neck turning.
I have some lee 6.5 WSM dies that I run it through first then the 25 WSSM dies.

Dean

PS: Sierra 70gr Blitzkings with 75gr of RL17 will yield 4400 FPS.

Always been an AI fan; I've got a 22-250AI pushing 55 grain pills that will kill anything out to 400 yards without thinking, anything over that distance is saved for a 6mmAI using 105's. If you can't get them within 800 yards you're doing something wrong.

Yea fun. I have just been playing with a large 6mm cheaper Weatherby, Vangard in 240 WM I am liking the 7 1/4 pound scoped rifle with a 95gr berger at 3,400 FPS from it's 24" barrel. I shot one load and had a 1FPS SD I thought wow that is unreal..I am really liking this 240 WM case...I know not a wildcat but it's still a wild one..very neat case.
I have played with a lot of cartridges over the years and only two Weatherby cases the 7WM and now this 240 and both had very good results. Maybe that Roy Weatherby did know what he was doing.

Did you know that in there heyday "when Roy was around" Weatherby factory ammo was hovering around 75000 psi, they have since tamed it.

Dean

PS: I use that same 70gr Sierra BK and 75gr RL17 load in my 257WBY, that is where I got it from.

yea I think I read the spec on the 240 WM ammo was 53K psi..mine our close to 70K and I show no pressure signs and I am sure I can push another 100 FPS and be at 75K but 3,400 well just slightly over is good.now if I can burn this barrel up I would love to put a 1-8 twist on it but really need 26" to ring the speed with the 105's.
I know a guy who has a 240 WM with a 1-8 on it and I was impressed how accurate it was with the 105's...This one has shot about 1 1/4" three shot groups at 200 yards for me..you have to like that a #2 fluted sporter barrel...6 3/4 lbs rifle.

Keep up the good work and Velocity rules.

Always wanted a 22 CHeetah. Way back when Carmichael/Huntington did the original cartridge, I fell in love with it. Thought it'd be the ultimate answer for all varmints. Later on I realized that the slow twist barrels typically used for that round only stabilized 50 grain bullets and nothing much heavier. My idea of the ultimate coyote round is a 22-243 AI with a faster barrel sending 75-80 grain match bullets around 3500 fps. Range on coyotes would be extended to 500-1000 yards easily and virtually recoil free with a fairly heavy gun. Allowing visual impacts thru the glass on your scope. Accuracy would be very good and depending on how hot you loaded it would give equal barrel life to the original CHeetah. Just my two cents and a future plan for MY ultimate coyote round.

I couldn't have said it any better. That is my ultimate coyote weapon. Besides my 20-250 AI... my 22-243 AI shooting 80 gr amaxes at 3558 fps... which can go faster... but the accuracy is sweet right now... and coyotes crumble.

The Ballistic charts make it sing loudly.

It's BAD MEDICINE... coyotes have tried to get it outlawed.

Any exit pics you would care to share? Thx u !!!

Daniel,

Any particular reason you decided on the 80`s vs the 75`s????

What freebore do you have on your rifle??

Phil.

At .435 BC for the 75 and .473 BC for the 80, I think it's a better option. Only 5 grains weight diff but considerable BC change for weight diff. The 80 eld-m will be another great option when hornady releases it. The BC on that bullet is .485.

Listed G1 B.C. for the 75Amax is .435. I use .425 for my ballistic calcs, as it jives better with my actual dope.
Listed G1 B.C. for the 80Amax is .453. That seems to work with my buddies' who shoot them...

Side by side, the 75 @ 3600 shoots a bit flatter to 500, than the 80 @ 3510.
The 75 seems to be a bit tougher bullet (more exits), where the 80 is just a death hammer...

For a fast twist .224 hotrod, you're gonna want to be ample on the freebore! IIRC, my chamber ended up past .100" to get a 75Amax where I wanted it. Shown here, FF load on left with an 80Amax, and fully formed .22-243AI with a 75Amax. Both @ 2.780"
(the 80Amax is essentially a 75 with longer shank)
That lone 2.780" OAL leaves more room for boom in the case, and still has plenty of neck on the bullet...

Day of calling with my partner:

He shoots a .22-243Win, and I'm shooting the AI flavor. Both 75Amax launchers in the 3600fps range. Whatever comes to the call is in deep shizz with that amount of ballistic nasty-ness pointed at 'em...
