True Bore Alignment System

I’ve bought three of them….there is an option to add it to your cart on the website and then specify in the notes which backplate you need.

And like magic it will show up at the shop a week later.

Nathan isn’t responsive to phone calls or emails from my experience but shipping has been prompt each time I’ve ordered.
You run a 1440GT don’t you? Any operational opinions you can share?

He seemed like a nice guy. He said something is wrong with his shop phone voicemail.

I wanted to try his range rod also.

No I have an acra 1440. It’s about 2800lbs 5hp Variable speed. Also have a 1340 acra and older Sheldon.

Mass is your friend….and good bearings

I had a pm1440tv which is bigger then 1440gt. Cast iron stand and 9” wide bed. It would be the minimum I’d recommend for the tbas, unless you don’t mind turning 600rpm and slower

Don't think I've ever turned a barrel faster than that. Maybe 500 to get a carbide reamer from singing.

Just keep in mind when I asked Nate what he thought of the idea of me putting that on my 1334 Standard Modern Military (Which does have a pretty beefy headstock and the casting is super strong steel not iron). The new lighter version should be fine just keep it below 800 RPM. For actually doing tenon work and muzzle threading I don't see a 800 RPM limit as an issue.

I think if you check out the video that ultimate reloader made with the owner of bat, he had some kind of a retainer made out of delrin that he used on the other end of the barrel to dampen vibration. Nate said something on the other end of the barrel is not a bad idea. He said he uses his flush system on the other end of the barrel and that eliminates the vibration somehow.

Yeah, saw that. If I used a TBAS, I'd still use my outboard spider to hold the barrel. I have it, might as well use it. I'll let you beta test. ;)

Aaron, I don't see how the outboard spider could work with the Truebore? You would put the barrel in a bind I would think?

When I have one in the TBAS, I dial it in with the outboard end not touching anything, and when done I just lightly finger touch the spider screws to the barrel and lock the jam nuts. I will recheck with the DTI that I did t change anything, and have not ever had it move by doing so.

That sounds good.

Just my own curiosity... anyone have pictures of the TBAS taken apart? I'm interested in how the coaxial alignment works between the two main "plates" of the system.

Not saying the system is bad. Very ingenious but the True Bore system adds a lot of length to the spindle vs a spider. It wouldn't work on my Haas. Depending on tenon length I need a 25" barrel to get to the outboard spider. And there's still the issue with balance at the RPM's I run . I don't have a balance issue as I dial in the throat and muzzle. I turn @ 275 SFM most of the time (1000 RPM's+) just on the tenon OD's and thread from 300-700 RPM's. Smaller diameter operations get to the machine max 2,000 RPM's quickly.

I'm pretty sure that Nate designed it for a Hass. And he is currently running it on a Hass. So, I'm not really sure how you're saying it wouldn't work. Because obviously it does.

Just saying.

You don't have to defend him. Very unique device that is a solution for some. But not all. VERY VERY Very small market if he designed it for a Haas. I seriously doubt that was the case. But then you know more than the rest of us.

"In 2011 I purchased my first Haas TL-1, this gave me the ability to machine the ball and socket into my fixture. After many design adjustments and many long hours the True Bore Alignment System was created. It was a success from the start! It made my job in the shop so much easier! Quick dial in time, near stress-free work holding, maintaining .0001 TIR through machining processes, allowing me to hold short barrels and long barrels while bringing two points of the bore into alignment. All things that contribute to a superior accurate rifle!

Up until March of 2021 the True Bore Alignment System has seen almost no design changes, but in March of 2021 I decided to update the radial cast front plate, primarily due to the castings that I purchase from a manufacturer having an 8 month lead time and my product supply being almost gone. I decided to use this opportunity to improve rigidity as well as aesthetics and that brings us up to date.

I have over 250 of these in service at some of the biggest named manufacturers in the industry as well as many accuracy minded sole proprietors and hobbyists and I am excited to serve many more of you with my innovative precision work holding and rifle building solutions. The True Bore Alignment system was engineered and has always been manufactured here at Straight Shot Gunsmithing."

Seems to work.

Just as a side note, doing a quick Google search, I also saw several other manufacturers of barrels that said they used the True Bore in CNC to make all of their barrels.
