Top Notch threading inserts and tool holder

I've been trying to make these things work and I can't get them to make a good thread. I saw Walt Kraftt was using them and he had a tool holder that had kind of a long point on it. I thought that might be perfect for doing muzzle threads where you have to get really fine threads right up against the shoulder.

I need to find a tool holder that holds the correct angle on the cutter so I guess I need a kennametal, but I want one that's relatively small.

I have had no luck making them work.

The MSC number for a 1/2" shank holder for those inserts is 88228788.
If you want the same insert with a positive rake that would be a NTK2R MSC 55317449

I bought that insert holder.

As far as the inserts. As far as I can decode from their numbering system, this is the fine thread version of the number you posted.

Yours is

NTK2R kc730

The one I bought is

NTF2R KC730

I guess I don't understand the "positive rake".

I already thread at a minimum of about 200 RPM and I do tenon threads at 400. I'm not sure how much faster I can go.

Try it on a piece of scrap. I bet the threads clean up when you get the speed/feed right. There are different grinds and materials that inserts are made of that dictate what the ideal speed is in a given material, with a given insert. They may not be practical for your application but I bet they will cut fine if you get it right.

I just spoke to the tech from MSC and she said the only difference between the NTK2r and the NTf2r is that the NTK has a chip breaker.

Bradley, At the speeds you are threading, HSS is going to work much better for you, You can get these which I use from time to time on some Tenons like Mauser and Enfield which are fast threads. You can use these inserts which are HSS from Arthur Warner company.

Arthur Warner caters to the Gunsmith and these are pretty good, You can buy stouter holders too and these inserts will fit. But to keep it simple just buy the whole kit from Arthur Warner.

I also use this tool from Hartwana, This is a very stout tool and has the correct 55 degree inserts for mauser, But the 60 degree HSS inserts from Arthur Warner also fit this Hartwana Threading tool. And Hartwana sells 60 degree inserts also. The Hartwana stuff is carbide.
