The Mighty 22-250

I have a Rem 700V. It must be a 14 TW because it shoots 40 grainers best of all. Anyone experience the same? Thanks for the input!

If it's a factory Remington 700 22-250, unfortunately, it's a 14tw barrel. About the best bullet I've ever shot from a 14tw 22-250 has been the 52gr Amax. Hornady doesn't make that particular bullet anymore but I believe their new 52gr ELD-M is the same bullet, just with their new heat shield tip.

B23, yep it’s factory except for floated barrel and trued bolt. I’ve tried 55’s but they don’t come near the 40’s for flat out accuracy. Used Lapua brass, VV powder, Br primers. I think it was N140. Been a few years since I’ve shot it. Still have a pic of the target with 5 in a quarter inch at 200.

I just bought another 22-250 Friday. tried some different things but so far XMR 8208 seems to be the mojo with 52 Sierra match bullets. Next is to get the trigger pull where I like it..

very first loading and new to reloading 22-250

55 gr Hornady SXSP...35.0 gr H4895...3725 fps...good accurate load but a bit unexciting, although it took out 5 pdogs with one shot (family made the mistake of tightly grouping up on one hill and my kid hit the biggest in the middle)

go-to loads now

55 gr Berger HP MEF...35.5 gr VVN 140...3632 fps...very accurate and really pops em in the air

40 gr Berger HP MEF…38.0 gr VVN 140…???? fps (didn’t record it!)…same as above

40 gr Berger HP MEF…11.0 gr IMR SR 4759…1925 fps…~.5”@100

I was looking through an old reloading manual and saw that they had SR 4759 listed as a powder for 22-250, so I decided to play around a bit out of curiosity…hit 11.0 gr and half inch groups…SURPRISE!!...use it for squirrels (ground and tree)

I have a bone stock HB Remington ADL, Xmark spring change - 2.5 lbs and crisp. Once I found the load this thing wanted, it has quickly become a favorite. As posted in Mr. M's thread, scored one ghog yesterday and now two more this evening. So far from 62 to 175 yards just hold it and kill it. Having fun but God it's hot in NC early:eek:
And to think I almost sold my 22-250 a couple months ago. Good thing I came to my senses before I did that. I’ve got some 4320 I’m going to try soon. It use to be a popular powder in the 22-250, in case you have any.

Some results of the past few weekends -
My buddy and I caught this one in a stump pile. We were shooting from the treeline in the background. Sow hog 258 yards.

My clean up crew - Got a boar and a sow the previous day, two yearlings day before that. They had quite a feast. 176 yards and 63 yards.

Of course that's not the farmers only problem -

And so the week continued........

So the 22-250s have been roaring here in Carolina, along with temps.

Just went to CNY to graduate my last two daughters from high school. Of course I stopped by my favorite farm and they are cutting, between rain. I hope to get in a day about two weeks from now. It was looking mighty good...lots of mounds of grass in the mowed fields. That means ticked off farmer who will be happy to see me. It has been two years.

And i am taking the 22-250...the only rifle that is currently good far 600 yards. All the rest have been fiddled with or sold.

Some time ago I remember shooting diagonally and across a vast alfalfa field at a wide coulee at a bunch of western yellow bellied marmots - aka rock-chucks. The wind was puffing up the coulee at about 15-20 mph, the wind was bending over the alfalfa in different directions depending on sheltering projections. The ranges were from 350 to 500 yards. I had a 14 twist .22-.250 loaded with 55 Sierra GK bullets & H380 powder. The chucks were playing around big rocks on the sides of the coulee and about 10 refrigerator sized rocks had chucks perched on top of each rock. I went through 50 rounds with a hit rate of 10-12%. My buddy witnessed this and took over using his 6.5-06 loaded with 129 Hornady flat based bullets & H4831 and nailed about 20 chucks with less than 40 rounds or about 50%. I have not quit using the .22-.250, now a 7.7 twist, but now load it with 75 ELDM bullets with H414 or H4350 at approx. 3175 fps. This matches or possibly surpasses an olde 6.5-06 load with 129 Hornady flat base at about the same velocity but with far less recoil and blast and cost. I also have a 6.5-06 loaded with 120 H ELDM bullets but rarely use it on rodents favoring the .22-.250.

post some pix! and have fun.

Two more quick ones tonight. Complicated field with houses lining the corner, i:e the best, safest location to shoot from for these hogs. I quick talk with a couple of the neighbors and I have the green light. Had tried a few shots with a silenced 22, and a 22 mag. Killed one with the mag. Tonight, to quote Levon Helm from the movie Shooter - " I quit the subtle tactics, brought a 6 story building down on their ass! "
22-250 again.

I met this old guy who killed several elks with a .22-.250, like on his farm for meat. I might shoot some deers with mine using 62 grain Barnes tipped bullets.
