The Mighty 22-250

Hey, have fun and sling what you want at 'em. I could get out the 45/70 and rainbow it in on them.
My former neighbor in upstate NY took one out at 58 yards with his Ruger .357. He's a dairy farmer and he gets plenty of practice. The .357 worked just fine!

I'm sure it did. My thread title says it all - I'm paying homage to a great old round, an accurate damn rifle and MY groundhog hunting here in NC. Just hoping to share some experiences and will continue to.
Appreciate the comments.

And I agree with you - it's a great old round. I have two .22-.250 Ackleys that see regular use. Amazing what a 50 gr. bullet moving well over 4K can do!

I found that dialing down made my 22-250 barrels last WAY longer. I run 35.2gns of IMR-4064 under 50V-maxes. 3 different barrels, 3 different reamers, years and years apart, and they all loved that load. Worked well with the 55 V-Max too. I think it may just be a really great spot in the powder to case to burn rate balance. Kinda like 30gns of Varget in a 6BR.

Same load with a 1-12 twist shoots tight groups!

As I posted a while back, I switched to the 53's and haven't regretted it at all. I know on around page 2 or 3 I said I had switched and was using a "secret squirrel " powder. Well, none of us are in competition here for murdering critters so now that the load has really worked out well - 34.5 grains of AR COMP and jumping the fool out of them. Yields me about 3750 out of a 26 inch barrel. Not sensitive to temps and it keeps my Varget saved for the 6 BR's.

I've had a 22/250 for a few months and still playing with load development, got some decent results with H380 but wanted to try some other powders I had. One of those is AR Comp, and one charge I tested was 34.5g with a 53g Varmageddon. Sub moa right now with 2 tests groups, I've also had some good indications at 33.5g as well. What COAL are you running in your version at????

Damn, knew somebody was going to make me measure those again. I'll get back to you in just a minute.
Edit to add - BTO is 1.9535, according to my notes and based on the 50 gr vmax chamber measurement to touch, I am jumping at least .100 if not a bit more. Tried them close, no cigar. When you shot a factory rifle and get a group like I posted, why waste time and throat wear?

Well, 270 Win
90g sierra
Imr 3031
Rem brass
close to max load will be 3550 with bug hole accuracy
Bedded pawn shop 700 in a wood stock, freefloated , tuned trigger

Chucks will fly like mocking birds chasing a hawk!

Saw one 90 grain 270 kill on a Chuck back in late 70s. Center punched at 200 yards, facing away. Nothing except skin left between balls and teeth. Green red spray in a cone shape on ground on other side of the deceased critter. Wowza.

120 gr. V-Max from my 7MM SAUM at 3650 fps makes for some colorful terminal ballistics. Use to run the Speer 130 gr. HP from my.308 Winchester at 3200 fps with a compressed load of IMR 3031, the audio and visual hits were memorable...gotta love the hollow plop.

Gents, I'd love to hear more about your experiences with the 53 V-max in a 1-14 twist 22-250!!! I'm about ready to load a few in my Remington 700 VS 22-250.... I've always heard they wouldn't shoot well in a 1-14, but after reading here, I'm excited to try them!!! I love those 53's in my 1-9" 223!!!! Keep the info coming, & thanks in advance guys!!!!! Work up toward 40 gr. H380 in the standard chambering and be prepared to be amazed! I run 42 gr. in an AI chamber and that bullet will take names and shoot as well as a match bullet. Push them fast enough and they will get your attention. My favorite .224 critter bullet.

I tried 53g Vmax in my Sako 75 1/14 twist 22-250 a year (?) ago. keyholed - 4” “group”. :). altitude - 800 ft +/-. I’ll try again now that I’m at 5500’...53g in my 5R 223 1/9-shoots very well. I’m on a PD shootin’ expedition now & the 223/ 53g combo really whacks em. even had a calm day on the prairie; a gift. bit derivative to the 22-250 thread...

May find that the extra 3500' elevation is all thats needed. My 9 twist 223 won't stabilize 75 Amax bullets well at all. I'm at around 800 ' here also. When I take it out west at 6000 ft, they magically seem to shoot very well
