The Mighty 22-250

I have a bone stock HB Remington ADL, Xmark spring change - 2.5 lbs and crisp. Once I found the load this thing wanted, it has quickly become a favorite. As posted in Mr. M's thread, scored one ghog yesterday and now two more this evening. So far from 62 to 175 yards just hold it and kill it. Having fun but God it's hot in NC early:eek:

Nope - not so much into the speed as precision. I don't mind both when they come together. Still on the learning curve with the Labradar and it's not catching 22 bullets with regularity. Over a pro chrono they are 3850 more or less. 55 gr Sierra Varmiteers over 35.5 gr. of Varget. Fun cartridge to play with, but I'm just about done playing as this load really kills well.

I found that dialing down made my 22-250 barrels last WAY longer. I run 35.2gns of IMR-4064 under 50V-maxes. 3 different barrels, 3 different reamers, years and years apart, and they all loved that load. Worked well with the 55 V-Max too. I think it may just be a really great spot in the powder to case to burn rate balance. Kinda like 30gns of Varget in a 6BR.

I have not been with out a beloved 22-250 since 1970. Currently loading 55 Berger FB / 36 grains Varget / CCI BR-2 / Winchester cases. Don't know , don't care about the velocity but guessing around 3500 fps.

You made me smile this morning Evan, that is my load. When I was just getting started in the late '60s w/ a used 788 I asked my gunsmith and he just smiled and told me 35 grns of 4064 and either a 50 or 55 grain bullet. I have tried many times over the years w/many many guns and could never beat it. It is really close to Varget in burn rate. I'd like to add that my gunsmith at the time Jim Craig, (he still shoots and hunts but closed his shop) is very accomplished in rifle shooting.

That load will push it in the heat! Oh, neve rmind, VArget isnt temp sensitive....

You will find another node around 3600 and the groundhogs won't know the difference, but your barrel will.
Yeah snert, that's why I went with Varget. Temps are suppose to be 96 F today.
Everything you and I discussed ran good. At some point I want to try AR Comp - just for the heck of it.
edit - changed my load info post, 35.5 g of Varget. Jeez, fat fingered.

The 22-250 was my first true varmint rig, a heavy barrel Winchester I got around 1980.
Over the years many many ground hogs, foxes, crows, etc got busted. After a lot of experimenting, I found that the 55 grainers held up better and did more damage to large varmints, especially out past a couple hundred yards. The 55 Sierra was (and still is) tough to beat.
I shoot the Swift a lot now but it doesn’t beat the old “250” by much.

I have 2 22-250 barrels and 1 22-250AI barrel and doubt I will ever wear 1 out as I don't use them. I have tried them for Ghogs but cant find the love. I tried a 9 twist with 75 Amax and did kill 2 @ 600yds, both 1 shot kills, a while later I killed 1 @ 650 yds with my 223AI shooting 53gr vmax. I know guys swear by them but I just don't see the need. To each their own. JMHO

Pulled out my old log book from 1975 on the 22-250 l did the IMR power thing, did my best shooting with ball power Winchester 748 35.5g sierra 55 spitzer also liked Hodgdon H380 37.0g sierra 55g spitzer both did under 1/2" at 100 yds when l did my part right.
The rifle was a Savage 112V 26" barrel single shot that l bought in 1976, just sold it last year downsized to Rem. 223 REM. SPS 26" barrel. working out loads for it, liking 748 and H380 it's not listed as a 223 power but working just fine as of now.

Love the 22-250,have had quite a few and will always have one. When I lived back east I remember an unlucky crow that thought he was safe at 333 yards and another at 20 yards that I got a quick shot at with a 60 grain sp that I thought I missed and later as he was gaining altitude fell out of the sky at about 50 feet in the air,boy was I surprised and educated a little about proper bullet choice. After moving west I put the 22-250 to use on pd’s and had some fun,but wanting to see the action I discovered the small calibers suited me better for colony varmints. But for high country chucks nothing beats the good ole 22-250.:)

IMO, the 22-250 is one of the best all around varmint/predator cartridges made and doesn't get near the credit or notoriety it deserves. I think it's really unfortunate all 22-250's don't come with, at least, a 12tw instead of all those 14tw barrels so guys could shoot the 53gr Vmax. A 12tw 22-250 shooting those sleek 53 Vmax makes for a pretty deadly combo on PD's, varmints and predators.

I had my 12tw 22-250 chopped back to 18 inches this past fall and run it with a can on it. It's a little louder than I'd like it to be, but it even with a can on the end its a very manageable length.

Im shooting a fast twist with 75gr vld and eldm and oh man what a lazer. Shooting them with H414. I take a battery of rifles to the pdog towns and its one of them

My first wildcat cartridge rifle was the 22/250. Huh? The 22/250 isn't a wildcat you say! Well, it was in 1959 when I bought this one! It was a very well made 98 Mauser conversion as were many of the custom rifles of the day. I don't know who made the 26" varmint weight barrel, but it shot really well. The trigger was an aftermarket with side safety set at 2#. I bought the rifle, two boxes of Norma .250 Savage cases, a set of CH reloading dies, a pound of IMR 4320, 100 Sisk 55 gr bullets and a box of primers for the princely sum of $60, which was slightly more than my month's take home pay from the military at the time. After several years the barrel was shot out and I foolishly traded the rifle. I have managed to keep a 22/250 of one sort of another ever since. I like the 22/250AI even better. Good shooting! Vic

My 7.7 twist .22-.250 with the Hornady 75 ELDM and H414 is also in my rodent rifle battery. As a side note, I previously shot 75 Amax bullets but Hornady quit making them so I switched to the 75 ELDM's which have a slightly different profile requiring deeper seating depths. The other battery members are a .20 Practical with 40 Vmax bullets for volume shooting and one of any other 6.5, .284, and .30 rifles that go along for an excuse to shoot them at long ranges. The .22-.250 with the 75 ELD compares favorably with the others including a 200 grain ELDX .300 Win mag but does not beat me up as much.

I have a Rem 700V. It must be a 14 TW because it shoots 40 grainers best of all. Anyone experience the same? Thanks for the input!
