Texas, Where to live and be close to F-Class Matches?

While I never lived in Texas, I always liked my stays in Weatherford. It seems like a nice place and, unless I'm mistaken, is fairly close to some good ranges (at least TX close). It's close enough to DFW and, at least last time I was there, far enough from DFW (if that makes sense).
Me, I would want to find somewhere close to the prairie dogs.

check your land taxes where ever you go, my house is locked because of MY AGE, shop no. I'm staying,,just beware of BETO,,:rolleyes:

You might want to check on the taxes, i believe the only thing age related is school taxes and the rate is locked, but no cap on the total. If your appraisel goes up, your taxes go up.

Just remember property taxes in Texas are local, school and county. I live in Jasper county on 53 acres in a 2300 sq. ft. house with barns and a few cows and my 2018 total property taxes were a little over $2200.00. A good friend who lives in the "good" area of Beaumont pays over $4000.00 for his nice home in a subdivision. You can control how much you pay by where you live and how big a house you have to have. Bayou is probably the premier range in Texas and I you wanted to live close I would look West of the range. Not sure of the communities of that area. There is also a range by Lake Jackson that use to hold 600 yard only matches, don't know if they still do. The shooters at Bayou are a great bunch of guys, can't go wrong with that range.

The key to having a fair tax rate in Texas is to stay out of counties with major cities, or a medium size city that is rapidly expanding. I lived 30 miles West of San Antonio for 24 years before retiring. My taxes on a 2100 sq/ft house and 43 acres was 3,300. I had AG exemption on most of the land. Medina county is a rural area with no aspirations of building anything with aspirations of becoming anything but a farming and ranching center.

Edit. I once fought a tax hike because the land beside me sold for a large price per acre. I wrote a letter stating I opposed the tax hike and told them the land that sold had a well on it with added 50K to the price of the land. They agreed and lowered it back to the old rate.

Moved to Georgetown from the Houston area last year. Live about 3-4 miles NW and things are really laid back, less crime, fewer people and a lot to do. Homeowners insurance
is 1/3 due to moving off the Gulf Coast. Property taxes is a game where you plan on protesting them most years.

Actually, I'm about to apply for the 65year old tax exemption. It does lock in your MAX school tax total amount. Increases in rates or appraisals will not increase those taxes. County and city will still go up. Home prices are skyrocketing around DFW area, my annual taxes were $8K just 5 years ago, this year, I paid $12K.

There is a range that has monthly rifle competitions (out to 1,100 yards), and IDPA comps located just north of Greenville, TX.

When you get here Papa Charlie, be sure to budget in a weekly allowance for the Blue Bell!
That's funny 20 years ago we couldn't get it up here and my buddy would take orders and drive all the way to Paris for it! When they had the misshap people were really missing it, especially my kids_ They came home really excited one day and i thought I was gonna hear a big buck story...nope they spotted the blue bell truck in the grocery store parking lot. News traveled fast over town and it sold out before we got there LOL

Yep! As long as you got a gallon of Homemade Vanilla in the freezer, you’ll never have a bad dessert again.

To add to DirtySteve,
I live about 5-10 miles from his old place in a subdivision in Medina county. And to be fair we are close to a lake that sometimes has water in it as well as 2 huge high fence game ranches. I don't have the ag exemption, We have 5 acres and a couple of added buildings 1 is a 60x40 shop which inside has a 900 sq foot apartment. Home is 1800 sq feet. Our taxes are $5800 for the year. I have tried to fight them but the county is unwilling to budge. They flat out refuse to discuss even with overwhelming evidence. Was told last summer, trying to fight a big increase, flat out get used to it, plan on that it will go up anther 10% next year and if you don't like it move you do not have to live here. They further said we are closer to San Antonio therefore property has more value.

Bottom line is really stay away from the larger cities not only for the tax issue but they are very blue in politics it will drive you crazy.

Add when we moved out here 14 years ago our taxes were $1800/year.

That is a huge increase, near $285 per year on average. This is one of the concerns we have with the influx of people moving to Texas and bringing their Blue thinking to the area.

"There is no income tax a big plus."

BS. They make it up in folds with crazy high property taxes!. I was in San Antonio, shot F Class at CTSA in New Braunsfels. 30 minutes. My tiny house with a tiny lot was $3400 in property tax. Bayou is the best, but anything Houston can be bad. Lots of gang activity. Houston is also a Liberal city like Austin.
I left TX and went to Alabama. I pay ZERO property tax (65 & up) and ZERO income tax on retirement income, including SS. My all brick ranch style home is 1700sf, 4 beds, 2 full bath.
Paid $149k.
I'm 35 minutes from gunclub with F Class, CMP, USPSA, STEEL CHALLENGE, and 5 stand.
Leaving TX was the smartest thing I've ever done.

Tell me about the no property tax in Alabama for 65 up. Lived here most of my life and I’m well over 65 and pay a chunk in property tax.

Most, but not all, Counties do this. I'm in Elmore Co. Just go to the tax office with your tax return, fill out the form, and you're done. In my case, property tax was only $600 a year anyway, but now that my mortgage escrow has adjusted, that's $50 a month my payment dropped.

I live in Pearland Texas. I love it here. I’m 12 miles from Bayou Rifles and 20 minutes from PSC.

Just know that summer is brutal here. I’m talking the gates of Hell hot. I was born and raised in South Texas so I’m used to it.

I know when i lived in texas i was begging for a state income tax for relief from the other astronomical taxes. I know its not as bad as other states but like a drivers license was like 5x higher than arkansas and the school tax and junk on my house was well over 4x higher for a smaller spread. They always get you somehow so dont let a no state income tax draw you in because its a trap! Texas is by far the greatest state to be in. Im a texan 100%
Our property taxes are our state income taxes in Texas. Just one look at the newer High Schools and you’ll see what I mean.
