Texas LR State Championship (April 28-30)

Down South

FTR Junkie
That time of year again next weekend at Bayou Club south of Houston TX. Team match Friday, individuals Saturday and Sunday. Match is almost full according to the email I read yesterday, if you wanna get in do it soon! Extended weather forecast is showing 20-30 mph winds Friday & Saturday, if that holds up it's gonna be fun!......:D......Looking forward to seeing everyone again and hoping to meet some new shooters as well, expecting to see a well run very competitive match!........;):)

I will be going also,it will be the first 1000yd match I have shot. The bad part is I will be shooting a 223 and with the winds suggested above o yea it ought to get interesting.I was thinking it was a 600yd match but after I committed to going I thought there is nothing like experience when it comes to learning.Hope to meet folks and learn some stuff to help me in the future.

BP1, look me up at the match at Bayou and I can give you some pointers, especially with the .223. I used to shoot that at 1000 in F-TR; it was a challenge. While I made HM at MR with the .223, I never got past SS at LR with the .223. I tried several bullets in .224 caliber, the best one for me was the 80gr JLK. It flew very well from my 26 inch 1:7.7 twisted Krieger barrel. Varget, Winchester cases and Remington 7 1/2 primers. I have a few thousand 80JLKs left here somewhere. I use them when I go to a 300yard match where I shoot my .223 F-TR rifle.

I'll be there! Since moving to TX from FLA this will be my 1st LR match. I've got momma settled in the new house, grandkids now know who I am. Time to get shooting again. Hope I can remember all the stuff I use to know like reading the wind. If not........well a learning experience.

Will do,if you don't mind telling how does down range face.I will be making a wind chart to try and help me figure wind calls.I am shooting 90gr vlds at 2820.I also am staying in Alvin Thursday-Saturday and will have extra bed in my room if anyone needs one at no cost Friday and Saturday .

I have also shot 1,000 with .223, and used the JLK 80 in an 8 twist. I couldn't get the load right for the longest time, but called Swampy, and he told me to jam them 10 thou, then they shot great! They will not keep up with the better .308 bullets, but they sure are easy to shoot.

The range shoots north. Prevailing wind is SE, and that's the forecast. Today was a switching wind from the north, but 55-70 degrees during the match. Do not expect those temps at the LR match. Expect 80-90 for highs, and humid.

Hey Jade! I will be there! After I sent my attendance paperwork in, Ron called me and said I was the first one in! I can't wait! Those crazy winds will make things very interesting! It will be great to see everyone again!

Will be great to see you again Ben, you driving or flying in?

One approach to consider would be during your first match, try to get at least a couple sighters off at either end of the range of wind conditions, if possible. Those will be your bookends. Then pick what you think will be the predominant condition in between the bookends and keep your finger off the trigger unless you see that condition. Much will depend on the actual wind conditions at the match, so be prepared to adapt as necessary to what you actually see. Even with 90s, shooting a .223 at 1000 yd is challenging. My philosophy has always been that I can't lose any points until I pull the trigger, so make sure you like what you see in the flags/mirage before you let one go. Do the best you can and have fun above all!

Once again thanks for the help, never thought about the bookend part have always sat and watched for the predominant wind and made my adjustments and shot then.I can see where at a 1000 it will be nice to have holds for light and heavy wind conditions while waiting on the predominant condition.

The weather forecast, should it hold true til next Sat. and Sun., the winds will be from the SSE on Saturday and S on Sunday. Winds will be about 20 M.P.H. Bayou will have that "fishtailing" winds, back and forth, back and forth at 20M.P.H.! That fishtailing effect is very tough to shoot in, especially if there are gusts very often, which is likely..

Looking like a front may pass through Sat night into Sunday morning. Winds changing from Southeast at 15-25 to Northeast at 15-25 by mid morning Sunday. Are they likely to call the match Sunday morning or wait it out a little while if it looks like it may pass through by 9-10?

I just printed the stickers for the rifle weight certification. Remember, 8.25 kilos (18.18lbs) for F-TR including bipod and mirage shields, etc; 10 kilos (22lbs) for F-Open including mirage shields, etc and 3 inches width on the fore-end of the stock. (We will have hacksaws, axes, knives and drills if adjustments are needed.)
