Southerners on Ice and TN Snowfall

Many yrs ago I was in San Antonio when they got ice, possibly the most on road silliness I’ve ever seen. Texicans must have been lined up at the body shops for a yr after.
Had a similar experience when stationed at Ft. Hood 30years ago when it snowed 4-5 inches. Sat in McDonald's , ate my breakfast & watched the maylay at the intersection for quite a while. Think I had some extra coffee's it was so funny. I did feel bad for them though as they did appear genuinely confused.
When I got my learners permit Mom took me up to the high school when it snowed to do donuts & fish tale around to get a feel for correcting it, braking & such. Never been off the road due to snow or ice.....sober.

Always nice to wake up to power going off in -13 temps( I know I know that’s not really cold to some of you but here it’s almost unheard of) when living in a camper..... luckily generator started on 6th pull so all systems are on go !

I got blamed for the 2020 freeze, too. For me, it was no big thing. . Having grown up in the northeast and all the snow, I realized that Texans have gotten a little soft. Where I grew up, this would last three or four months. I think the folks up in Wyoming might be the toughest folks around.
Fokes in Wyoming probably are more resistant to the cold than us southern fokes but the cattle up there have to be part buffalo.... judging by what it takes to keep my cattle up in Arkansas for a cold snap like this one I don't know how the horses or cattle make it in the conditions they have there, or anywhere in the upper great plains for that matter... Your a good man....I'd be tempted to leave them there!
A few years back, during a bad blizzard in southern Alberta, my son was just driving around in his old deuce and a half, rescuing stranded motorists, "just for the fun of it", as he said. He came upon one minivan which didn't look all that stuck. He knocked on the window and asked the driver if he would like him to get his minivan out. The driver did, so Chris got into the van and drove it out. He suggested that the driver go to the 7 Eleven visible through the snow and stay there. The driver made it about 100 feet and got stuck again. Chris climbed back into the old truck and started off. His friend who was with him asked if he was just going to leave the guy there. Chris said it was best to keep him off the road as a public service and he probably wouldn't die. WH

Will I love this!!! I have driven a 4 wheel drive truck most of my life. I see these small cars pass me up in a blizzard. I say to myself, I'm not stopping when I see you slide off.

Well wish I had a little more snow, but dam after 4 years forgot how nice 5" of ice was! My hope is we keep at least these single digits and the winds stays wowed. I love this, and want the ice to stick around a couple months.

We used to have safe fishing ice 3.5 to 4 months out of the year. Last 4 we have not had a month of decent ice to get on. The last two of them I couldn't even get on what we had the 2 or three weeks some were able to get on because of shoulder and knee replacements. With both I was told if I screwed them up, there was no fixing them.

Well today I made a test run to the lake, ours is the one with the most springs, when it's good the two bigger lakes are great. 5" was never so much fun drilling. I think Carter liked it better than me, he has looked at me like "sucks to be you, but why can't I go play on it" the last 4 years. He flat wanted to stay and I had to stay on him to go.

I'll be putting the guns away as long as it last, and breaking out the ice rods and tipups, forget shooting. I just worry it will only be a week or so, as 5 days ago it was open water, and Monday the 30's are back and 40's are being predicted the rest of the week, that my friends sucks Fer this old man. I don't like the 30 and 40 below wind chills but I'll take -5 to -10, if it means I don't have to play in the mud and no ice again this time of year!

Sometimes it would be the right lane, sometimes the left lane. The other lane would be 6 inches of untracked fresh powder. Those who drive in snow country know where the traction is. It was like having my own private highway into Seattle.
Do this all the time on 195 driving past people who don't have a clue. Then there's the local yahoos with the lifted 4x4s, big tires, blowing black smoke. I just smile, knowing I'll see them a few miles down the road.

When making the commute to the city over 10yrs ago my daily driver was a '93 Sable, 3.8L, dedicated snows all 4 corners and never had a problem. I prefer my wife's Outback with Blizzaks over my 4WD truck any day unless the snow is really deep.

Got 6" here yesterday, another inch or so forecast today, at 9° it's just powder. :)

That's the biggest differance in snow, super cold dry snow is usually associated with perspiration amounts of 1" snow can be less than .1" of rain water if rain, but in warmer 32* is degree weather when snow is like slush, it can be 3 to 4" of water creating .1" this heavier more treacherous snow to drive in packs like ice, and throws you around in its tracks because it's so heavy. Wider tires are harder to roll thru it, going in and out of tracks throws the vehicle out of control easier. Where light powder won't.

4" of snow so cold it won't pack can be lighter than .4" of water, or wet heavey 4" that is soft and packs ice hard can wiegh as much as 1.5 to 2" of water. Same depth of snow, but 4 to 5 times more water to make it.

This is what NW Ohio and Southern Michigagan got here. 1.4" of precip, made a little over 1" of snow on grass, less on pavement, that's what made the roads more dangerous, as soon as on track was laid, it's now ice surrounded by slush, when you start sliding, your tires compress that slush as it crosses over it making its own ice over the hard smooth surface under it. The bigger the tire, the more surface it contackts. The more this is promoted.

The wet snow is the most dangerous, light powder falling in single digits is pretty easy to drive in, even 4 to 6 inches of this powder is better than 1 or 2 inches of wet snow for controlling the vehicle in.

so....our roads were actually a lot better today. Not normal, but way better than yesterday.
This guy apparently is lacking in driving skills or common sense. Who knows.
This happened across the street from a buddy of mines shop. Not being one to pass up a opportunity to be a smart ass.......once he sees the driver is ok he asks him " you know you can't park there, right?
Special talent takes up less spaces
