Southerners on Ice and TN Snowfall

I never heard a total here and kinda hard to say. I'd guess maybe 4" total. It just won't leave! I need one more snow and a good freeze in about 2-4 weeks. Gonna try frost seeding some red clover over about 30 acres of hay ground. Never frost seeded clover before and just gonna cross my fingers and hope. I don't need or want much. Ideal would be about 20-25% stand in the field. Just looking to fix nitrogen and work the top layer a bit..and add a little protein and mass to the hay.

I'd like to seed over 2-3 inches of snow.
Interesting:)

I think it's a lot about timing. I've heard of people doing it with good success and others that it didn't work well at all for. The good thing is that it's not a lot of land and if it doesn't work well, I didn't lose a lot trying. I just think it's worth gambling on is all. If I got half of my target germination rate, it wouldn't be a total loss either. We'll see.

Does the Red Clover need to be inoculated?

Some yes, some not. Been studying a new variety that is 2-4,d tolerant. Waiting on a price from my local Co op. It may be cost prohibitive for frost seeding. If I re seed in a couple of years or so, I may killit down and drill it in. I think this seed is pre inoculated but not a big deal either way.

My personal experience with Red Clover is the germination rate is higher if it goes through at least one hard freeze but no 'scientific evidence' to back that up.

I just look at the field in March and decided what did or didn't work.

Well it's all over here in NW Ohio. Rain all night and Fer the next 2 days. We won't get to freezing again thru Sunday. That will be enough to destroy any ice on the lakes we had.

So once again 4 days to one week of hard water sports. I won't go on weekends leaving it to the weekend warriors. I learned a long time ago it's much more enjoyable during the week. But now 1/2 inch of rain on top of melting ice, withreplaced knees and bad bad angles, I ain't risking a broken hip to try it one or two days before it's once again thin ice.

Now slop and mud for the next 2 months, that's what all the snow birds pray for that want to be in Florida but can't afford it. Hope they enjoy it, I'll be back in the shop cutting and turning brass, maybe sneak out in the rain between drops to check some loads in the new 222 BR rigg.

But for the 6th year, a little tease of winter, and gotcha again, SUCKER! winter is a thing of the past, mud and slop is what we get these days, depressing!
