Sks and 7.62x39 for deer for youth or small wife

I would buy the SKS and the ammo and just shoot up the ammo, then sell the gun for what you paid for it. I believe Savage and Ruger both make bolt action rifles in X39. Buy the SKS and the ammo , then sell the gun for maybe more than you paid for it, and buy a bolt action and have the cheap ammo to shoot thru the bolt gun.
Will the SKS kill a deer, you bet, but I wouldn't go past 100yds and would load ammo for it with a decent bullet, maybe the Nosler 125 BT (yeah I know, smaller bullet, but might work well) or a 130 speer or 125 sierra designed for the 30-30

I would not let a new shooter near one for hunting. The safety is down right dangerous. It amounts to a lever that swings up to block the trigger. Far too easy for an accidental discharge.

Semi-auto rifles are banned in most states for hunting most animals.

Man ; Am I glad I didn't read all of these SKS Hater posts before I carried one of them "Commie" pieces of junk in the Nam for 19 months . I'd have run right out and traded for a "Made by Mattel , they're swell" piece of shit M-16's that wouldn't kill crap at point blank range . Any of you "EXPERTS" know how many of the 60,000 names on that Wall in the District of Corruption were put there by that SKS ? More than you think . Operator required . I know what a SK can do out to 150 yards . If you don't know the limit of the weapon , you shouldn't be hunting with anything to begin with . Your benevolent govt. sent us into combat with a weapon designed "NOT" to kill . And it is called the "New" great American rifle of today . I'll keep the SK I brought back to the world , cause "IT" brought me back . Done with this ......!

Rockrat are those 308 bullets and do they work in an SKS? I was under the impression that an SKS required a .311 bullet. i know that a Mini 30 by Ruger has a long lead that funnels a .311 bullet down to a .308 bore barrel. but does it work the other way around?

Thanks for your service, i dont know you from adam but i am glad you made it back, wish more of our boys would have.

To update the situation:
Here is the decision I made: I passed on the sks and decided to buy youth stocks for two rifles i already have and will download ammo to what the wife and kids can handle. With the money i saved I am goingbto buy an additional muzzleloader for the kids to use during the muzzleloader season or when we hunt locally. The area we live in is slugs or muzzleloaders for deer an dwhere i hunt in the northern part of mn we can use rifles, so i am looking at having the most flexibility as far as seasons and locations depending on where we are seeing deer and when we have time to get out hunting. This option does that without spending a ton of money.
I appreciate everyone’s thoughts on the subject

I shoot the .308" bullets in an AR X39 upper. Think of the older Super Vel ammo, which IIRC, used undersized bullets. Don't know how the .308 bullets would work in an .311" groove barrel, but they work fine in my .310" groove X39

A .243 doesn't kick, and it doesn't need to be downloaded either. The X39mm does the job as well. It and the Siminov have killed way more deer than the haters would admit. Nothing wrong with tailoring loads for rifles you've already got though. People overthink these things. Deer aren't hard to kill.

I have a old H&R Handi rifle set up with a collapsible stock with a 7.62-39 barrel, it has a .311" bore according to the folks at H&R but it shoots great with 125 grain Bal. Tips. This gun has accounted for a bunch of first deer kills by kids, the last was just a couple weeks ago by a 12 year old young lady.

I am glad to find you guys are shooting 308 bullets in a 762x39. I have wanted to build one but I am not going to if i have to add another bullet dia to the already large list.

If you're building a gun for it just have the smith use a .308" barrel, McGowen offers it with either groove diameter in their barrel chamberings

I'm thinking 6.5 Grendel in one of the newer, less expensive bolt guns. Low recoil, decent knockdown for deer. If they are larger-framed gals, maybe a .243 or .257 Roberts. Me - I'd avoid any kind of semi-auto or tube-fed guns with a new shooter, regardless of caliber. Some of these new bolt guns can be had for very close to that price point.

Anything from a communist country is made with the philosophy of producing the largest amount, the cheapest, and quickest way possible. Train enough people to move in large formations firing at the same objective then, yes they are effective. I wouldn’t use any 4 MOA rifle for hunting.

You made the right call, OP.

The SKS isn't typically a rifle that would get much attention on a forum such as "Accurate Shooter", but we often discuss rifles that are in that performance category. (also shotguns, muzzle loaders, handguns, etc.)

Of course it's not the "best" alternative for a starter rifle, primarily because it's kind of heavy for a small child or small woman. That didn't seem to be much of a problem for the bazillion or so Com-Block military and civilian people who were often of very small stature.

These rifles exist in vast numbers in almost every part of the world, and I'd wager that it has been the first, and often only rifle for many young and old hunters to take their deers, boars, bears, and whatever type of critters happen to inhabit Africa, Asia, Canada, Russia, Afghanistan, --- well you know what I'm sayin.

In many areas of the world where children are raised to do more strenuous things than play video games, or their phones, the average twelve year old wouldn't bat an eye at packing an eight pound SKS into the hills to slay whatever he or she might find.

The Simonov is an incredibly durable, reliable, rifle, and the world is full of ammo for them. They are about as accurate as a 30-30 with buckhorn sights, and it can also be used as a club, spear, jack handle, tent pole -- ;) jd
