Seek load 2500+ fps at 1k with light bullets

Thr new Army round has a steel case head an runs at a much higher pressure than a brass case can handle. Maybe it can an maybe it can't. We should have some real data in the near future.

Frank
The Hybrid case is listed with the 150 Nosler Accu-Bond at 3100+fps at 100 yds, The lighter bullet is brass cased and runs at "normal" pressures.

What is NGSW? You mean NSWDG?
Next generation squad weapon program. The army just announced that sig would be getting a contract to produce thier mcx rifle in sig’s brand new bi-metallic 6.8x51mm cartridge. I’ve read that it’s supposed to run at 85,000psi hence the need for a steel case head.

Some guy at work was saying that it’s supposed to maintain at least 2500 fps at 1000 yards, but it doesn’t seem possible to me.

I read that the army independently concluded that 6.8mm diameter was best for armor penetration and that they had also separately concluded that 2500 fps was a good velocity for creating large wound cavities even if only a small portion of the projectile made it through the ballistic vest. At somewhere between 120-130 grains, the majority of the projectile won’t make it through the armor but the portion that does will be traveling at 2500fps, and that’s supposed to be the secret sauce to causing effective wound channels against armored enemies on the opposite side of a big open desert or mountain range.

They also adopted a new optic as well with built in ballistic calculator, and a host of environmental sensors.

They have a separate civilian load because the projectiles were supplied by the army. The case, though the same dimensions is also different from the one they are selling to the army.

I’m not sure that the bimetallic case will even be available anytime soon, and I think it’s because certain domestic groups are also on the list of near peers.

It was on sale at the Sig web site $84.95 but is out of stock now. The base is stainless with a brass body.

That requirement, 2500fps at 1000 yards from a 308 Caliber bullet cannot be accomplished with brass cases and current commercial rifles techonolgies

I did the math

Requirements:
Caliber: 308
2500 fps at 1000 yards

Possible solution:
Bullet 230gr A-tip, G7 BC 0.414
MV 3700 fps or more

Case Max pressure 85K PSI !!!!
Case Capacity 128gr of H20 or more
Barrel length 40-43"
Muzzle energy 6900 ft*lb

Good luck with your rifle

BTW, your friend at work is a moron

Yep you either need a impossibly high speed and/or impossibly high BC

Even a beast like a 416/50 BMG with 550 grain solids would have difficulty achieving that.

They may joke about the 6.5, but neck down the 50 BMG, put a good fast twist in and it will do so with the 123 grain hornady bullet. Now finding a very accurate load might be the challenge, at least for MOA groups.
Build one up and have fun.

Do you use software for this? That’s an impressive calculation.

This may be bad information or I might have bought into the hype, but this Ngsw rifle that the army is looking to adopt is supposed to be able to do that. My knee jerk reaction was bs but I thought maybe there was some kind of exotic crap going on that I hadn’t heard of.

I guess you can’t trust every random yahoo at work who claims to be a “gun guy.”
I have read a few good articles on the new rifle and ammo on the internet.

Replaces the carbine and squad machine gun?

30mm AP from a GAU-8 should do it.

Maybe you could do it with a 20mm cannon with custom solids, if you had the budget and tax stamp.

No .277 caliber will get there using chemical propellants. 84ksi or not.

AFWIW...(which "ain't" much).

My standard load in my 22-243 Imp for the last four years for long range Praire Dogs in WY.

Hornady 22 cal 75 gr ELD-M:

.467 (GI) b.c.

2.0" Sight Height

20 MOA rail

3640 fps at muzzle.

6500' elevation...temp 65* average.

750 yd zero (don't shoot anything under 700 yds with this rifle)

2074 fps @ a 1000 yds...717 ft #'s energy.

This is the best combination I've come up with. Doesn't kick ya completely off the bags...Lol!
