Rem action accuracy

How do you test "inaccuracy"?

What are your standards?

What is your baseline?

What are you measuring against?

How bad do groups have to be to be considered inaccurate?

How to test - that's a good question, and possibly your point? Sorry if this is a completely dumb question, just curious if someone who was a CASUAL competitor could get by for a little cheaper.

I was just thinking the main purpose of the action is to hold the case up in the barrel until it goes off. So does it really make that big a difference if the face of the action is a few thousandths out from perpendicular? Would it make a barrel that shoots in the .2's into one that's just MOA?

Maybe that's a harder question than it seems, since every piece is part of a system, and the final interaction depends on many variables. Just wondered if anyone had success in doing this. Thanks!

True-250
Time ignition and extraction-250
ream/install bolt bushings-100
bush bolt and turn pin-100
fit new shroud-50
ground/pinned lug installed-100
align and enlarge scope mount holes to 8-40-75
Install Sako or mini-16 if needed to eject br cases-125
Make and install single shot adapter-75
Install side bolt release-100.

$1225 in parts and labor plus the cost of the doner action.

What a big waste of money, even at $Hundreds less.

My question is if I build a br gun with all the same quality parts and quality work on a rem action can it be as accurate as a custom with same components? Not trying to start a debate of rem vs custom. What would make it less accurate, bolt design etc? The class I presently shoot only allows factory actions so I'm trying to decide my what to build next, modified or custom. Thanks

For your factory action, how would a Tikka do? They are the smoothest factory action I have shot to date. There may be others.....

Since you are taking an unaltered action to do your testing, you have no idea what you are testing.

Grab a dozen off-the-shelf actions, and you'll likely come up with inaccurate, or less than ideal, measurements covering different areas and to different degrees in each action.

So any "testing" would be completely random.

When "blueprinting" an action, you are working TOWARDS an ideal goal. If testing for "inaccuracies", how do you test AWAY from that goal, and know that any particular factor was the one that may have affected a group?

I think I know where you are going though with your thinking.

A possibility is to roll the dice and take your chances.... buy a 700 action (or rifle and strip it), then have your 'smith of choice take a few measurements. If "close enough", go ahead, barrel it up, and go shoot. You likely won't win every time, but depending on what you are doing, may be competitive enough to have fun. If he finds something way out of whack, pass on using that action, or just make it into a minute-of-deer rig.

You will save the cost of having any truing done (though will have some smaller amount involved in paying your 'smith to check it out), and may find a perfectly acceptable action in the process.

Yes that seems like a fair assesment. Even though you can buy a new 700 action for $350 or so (I think), the gamble you're taking on QA is proportionally higher.

I think Remington actions are great for most shooting. The only thing that a action needs to do is lock up true and safe. From there on nothing will make it shoot better . Accuracy from there on would depend on the Person who is doing it . Larry

I asked you, very politely, for the site where the results of your club matches are posted. I guess that's just like Butch asking for step by step details. You seem to be, "all flash and no cash" when it comes to proving your point. Your use of a "screen name" was a "dead give away".
There are no "official" Manatee records posted anywhere.
