Redding: Hard to Like Sometimes

Lol. This Tennessee walker got beat to death about 2 pages ago.
Obviously you are correct, and it is wayyyyyyy painfully obvious that there are a lot of Redding investors/owner's that are forum members, only thing I can think of for sticking up for shoddy craftsmanship on there boxes, top rate dies in bottom rate packages, makes sense to me for sure ;)
So with that being said I am also done with this conversation as it is pointless, I do have to wonder if these same people that are going to bat for Redding would be happy if they bought there wives a Diamond necklace and it came in a Safeway paper bag?......That's all!!!!

Calling all these posts "pointless" is about half of it and "MINDLESS" is the other half. Yet we now have the added attraction of "Wondering" about giving your wife a Diamond neckless in a Safeway paperbag and somehow equating it with the quality of Redding reloading equipment or a stupid die box? REALLY????? I'd call that CLASSLESS! Simply incredible!!!!! Yep..that's all.

Are you willing to front Redding the cost of engineering design and building new injection mold dies?

Because you don't want to...

No. Because I shouldn't have to.

I've laughed this thread off until today. New Redding .223 FL die. I sprayed it out with contact cleaner, mounted it up in the press, inserted a clean, Imperial lubricated case and.... scrrrrrrrrich! Stuck. Rim ripped off, and when I finally got it apart and the case out, found a stripped stem and fractured expander ball. All I can figure is, the expander was set too high and it wedged. FML. Meanwhile, my $11 Lee FL die just keeps chugging along... serves me right for thinking something else was better.

There is nothing wrong with Redding dies, I would say the contact cleaner had something to do with your problem, there boxes suck but not the dies themselves, sorry you had a bad experience, I think that has happened to all of us at one piont or another.

New dies, from any maker, Lee, RCBS, Hornady, Forster, Redding, Lyman, Wilson, Whiddon, or whatever, should be taken apart, cleaned and then adjusted.

It's not the fault of the manufacturer if you mess up a die due to laziness.....

Quire an assumption to call him lazy, when it was probably more of an oversight. Just sayin'!

I know there is nothing generally wrong with Redding or any other die, just weird it happened. My fault for assuming the expander ball was set properly right out of the box, I guess. Die was clean, case was well lubed, not my first rodeo. ;)

Redding called me today about the box issue. He said there isn't enough complaints about the box to warrant an investment in molding a new container. He suggested to remove the micrometer top, or screw it back down to fit the box.

Duh!.....like we didn't know that are ready LOL. Chuck,...this same type tread was going on sometime back and one of the forum members went to Redding just as you did,............He got the same answer :o kind of makes me chuckle inside.

Really like to spend time bitchin about die boxes?

Forster boxes half suck anyway, even though they are long enough to hold an assembled die body die, most of the time...

But really, what is the point of trying to pretend you understand the dynamics of precision shooting, if you believe that without shoulder support in a seater die, you can't properly seat a bullet?

I don't doubt Redding, but hope they do realize people may make purchase decisions based on information they find before plunking down their money. These are "lost sales" and are invisible. But they are there. I for one, if I had done more research (I was very new at the time), would have found the box/fitment issue and just purchased Forster dies and never told Redding, "Hey, I didn't buy your dies because of xxx".

Yes you do!

No they do not suck and they ALWAYS hold the seating die extended all the way!

That's just plain silly!

My suggestion, anyone with beef with Redding, give them a call and express your complaints. Maybe someday they will make what you want. I recall a thread like this a couple years ago...still the same though. LOL

Another option...get yourself a few oak blocks and a forstner bit and bore a few 7/8" holes in it for a die holder block.

Hogan, you are too funny, lol

I have a couple set of Redding dies that work fine. I bought a set for my Swift and they would not size them enough to chamber. I sent them back with a fired case and they told me I had a tight or small chamber, and I needed a small base die which they do not make. It's odd that my 30 year old RCBS that is not small base works fine. I have also tried their bushing dies and always ended up with poor runout. I have gone to Forster and am completely happy. The custom neck honing service they provide is an excellent setup. My 2 cents worth. Barlow

Barlow,
The reason the RCBS works is they really over size all parts of the case, as far as runout with the Redding bushing dies is most, not saying in your case but most people try sizing there factory chambers with them and they need to go .006-..010 and sometimes even more and that is way to much to size all at once, I try not to size more then .003 at a time on the neck and .002 is better.
