Rail Guns at 600 yard BR

I recall that situation but don't throw me under the bus I didn't have anything to do with it.

Stan, I wouldn't do that but the people in charge seemed so scared of the 130 lb HG. they were try all they could do to make it illegal. Now the rail gun that is totally illegal in long range is welcomed with open arms. ..... jim

I honestly don't believe it is welcome with open arms, but it is a very good topic of discussion,to enhance the long range shooting program 4 shooters, that are so dedicated to our sport they have this equipment a lot of them do so let's try to put it to use that's the goal.

A couple of things...

The heavy gun class already allows for mechanical rear rests as long as they are not attached.

Why not allow Rails in the Heavy Class? Or an Unlimited Class? A new challenge might add some interest. I have a rail I would love to shoot at the 600 yard matches.

Benchrest has always been the Top Fuel class for shooting sports. I think we are so resistant to change we may be getting a little stale. Lets try a little innovation and shake things up some.

Stan, i understand, but you heavy and light two factory gun classes and and an unlimited? that is 5 classes with shoot offs...one match a day....... The NRA. did the same and killed Silhouette with too many classes and it died.... You add so many expensive guns to compete you price everyone out.
To compete for the win at the national you will need 5 guns..... How is that bringing in new shooters, and there sure won't be a lot of extra money floating around after this Virus deal gets over..... jim

Jim,

I don't get the need for 5 guns. Maybe I am ignorant of the classes shot. Light and Heavy, Maybe add an unlimited. I have not seen an IBS or NBRSA factory class. Most guys I have seen shoot the light gun in the heavy class also. Many with a lot of success. So..Shoot an unlimited if someone wants to. Maybe that's a Rail, maybe not. Short range, most shoot the same gun in Sporter, LV and HV. (Assuming there is a Sporter class at all.)

Innovation that comes from something that is fresh and new adds to our sport.

I dont think this is a way to bring in "new" shooters. Just another class that should have always been there IMO. Unlimited does not mean rail, it means unlimited. As far as bringing in actual new shooters, classes and rule changes dont do that. New shooters do not even know what BR is because we do such a bad job of of exposing in to the general shooting public. If you go to any other site and read what people think is BR, the info is 20 years old or flat out wrong.

Alex,
I agree, We do a poor job of exposing potential shooters to BR.

Any ideas? Shooter clinics? Lend a BR rifle at matches with a mentor? Bullet and BR equipment folks as sponsors so new shooters can try it?

These are real questions not meant to be directed at you Alex. Just thinking out loud. BR can be daunting without help starting out. Crap, it can be humbling no matter how long you have been doing it!

Yeah, I know. But we are going to have to stop talking about it. Put some offers for an intro on hosting club emails and websites and do it.

This is a hoist the black flag, draw the Cutlass and go over the side thing. Who at where you shoot could organize this? At the matches in the SE or anywhere I was going to be at, I would volunteer a rifle and some equipment.

Maybe at the IBS 600 matches we could split the targets for absolute new guys? They could each shoot 2 targets. More new guys getting a taste. for a Light and Heavy match that is 4 potential new shooters.

Talking never gets it done. I'll bet Bart would donate a few bullets for a brand new shooter to see how it works. For a couple of targets he would need less than 50 including practice. Who else might have something to help the cause?

This won’t happen overnight. If you ain’t fishing you aren’t gonna catch anything. Some days I don’t catch anything. But some days I do great. Gotta keep fishing!

I have intentions of campaigning this for sure someone said already it's about accuracy of the best equipment we have,I will be shooting a rail gun on practice targets at 600 an will be allowing other shooters to get there feet wet, I think it's definitely a consideration for the future.

George,

I think yours is a good question. Playing devils advocate...I'm not sure that in the short run we can tell. If we play a long game for the benefit of BR it will work out.
IF it doesn't cost a bunch, the long term probably works. A welcoming attitude for potential shooters will pay off.

Even if the shooter doesn't immediately become a hard core competitor he will tell others. Highlighting the new shooters on the hosting club website would go a long way.
This is a long game. We have to focus on that in my opinion.

so long term in 35 yrs. I have personally set up at gun shows set up at open days at ranges that held br matches to let other disciplines see what we do and allowed people to shoot my rifles. it was always the same. people would shoot a group or two , say wow thats neat can I have the targets. gave bullets away to "new" shooters , chambered barrels for free for "new" shooters taken them to matches where they could shoot first one free the ones that stayed WANTED to. for the most part they stay 3-5 yrs. and then move on.... you get tired beating a dead horse...

Anything to shoot more at a match im all for. Lots of shooting is what attracts new shooters not sitting around all day only getting to watch half the shooting. All you gotta do is get on youtube and watch a prs match and see where all the new shooters are. Sign up months before only to be number 100 on the waiting list? And what draws hundreds of shooters out to those matches? There are classes where they can actually compete with a $1500 gun and tons of shooting. Until benchrest evolves to attract the younger shooters its going to be the same old guys with a few less every year, taking 100rds to a match knowing youre going to be bringing some back home, and wondering what money you can spend next to be a winner.

How many new shooters continued or are shooting matches after this program. just asking ....

3 to 4 if i recall correctly over the 2 years we did it. I wasn't involved personally, just on occasion helped the shooter set it up if Glen wasn't around. Since I call the line, I'm never not around.....Glen had a habit of leaving it's ammo in his car a thousand damn yards away lol.
