Rail Guns at 600 yard BR

Here is a setup that I used a few years ago to just try for grins...

Used one of my rail gun tops with a ultra wide track. Barrel is a 32” 1-1/2” straight krieger chambered for a 300wsm shooting a 215 grain Berger.

The first time I tried it was at 100 yards, to my disbelief I shot a few groups in the zero’s..

Took the barreled action out and put in my 45 pound heavy bag gun. Shot ok but not like in the rail.

During the nbrsa rail gun matches, if the conditions are mild I can get 5 shots off in less than 5 seconds (most good rails return to battery)..

The 6ppc rails guns are not any more accurate, but can outrun the conditions better than a bag gun... In the short range rail gun matches at 100-200 the bag guns rarely can compete.

Just look at the aggs for short range IBS and nbrsa nat’s.. The rails have much smaller aggs.

One last thought, it seems like the rail guns are easier to tune with a larger tune window, just my experience.

Who’s rail build is that?

I think the only rule should be that you have to lift it onto the bench yourself. I'd also think that 1000yard bullseye would be an interesting way to balance everything out. Target has 5 different bullseyes at 2, 4, 8, 10 and center and you take one shot each.

picture above shows the latest rail gun from Jay Young.. really a great guy to deal with.

these rail guns are a two piece unit, top chassis which fits onto the carriage.

At the nbrsa short range nat’s, one has to setup/shoot/remove the rail gun 8 times in one day... after each target, shooter rotates to the next designated bench (usually 10 benches plus?).

most of these guys are older.. go figure

I'm 74 years old and I still carry my 85 lb. H.G. to the bench! I keep telling people when I can't carry it to the line anymore I'm done shooting. I started in 1971 shooting a H.G. and to me it's always been a lot of fun to shoot a H.G. But I'm not convinced weight is the only answer because I get my butt handed to me every once in while by L.G.'s. So sometime before I stop shooting I would love to sit next to a rail gun at our range, and have fun.

I think people are overestimating the advantage a rail gun supposedly gives. I'd argue that you're always losing to the shooter, not his equipment. Light, heavy, or rail no amount of equipment makes up for shooter deficits.

In short range BR, 100 & 200 yard group shooting.
I would bet the LV and HV shooters would say the opposite.
From my own observations, the folks shooting LV & HV in the Unlimited class appear to be at a distinct disadvantage. Every now and again I will see the LV or HV shooters give the rails a run for their money.
Again, this is from my limited experience at short-range BR matches.
Lots of short-range shooters on this forum who will come along soon enough and correct me.

Evan are you telling me I suck as a shooter, after all these years I thought I was Half a$$ good. LOL
Although a lot of people will tell you a Monkey can shoot a H.G. There are just to many variables to just say it's this our that. I've shot against the best in the country, and got beat by say 100 thousands of an inch or just the opposite. That's why I always look forward shooting against the top shooter at any Match I go to. Just to see if I'm doing my part.

Aren't the blue ones made by Craig Kensler? D
Don,
Jay and I sent several emails back and forth yesterday. As a rail rookie....... maybe whatever has less understanding then a rookie????? I asked him all sorts of questions, he sent me both of those pictures so I could see what colors were available. There are more pictures and colors, I just have not posted them all.
Jay said he builds several different rails based on the needs of the customers. Bigger stouter for heavier cartridges, ammo/accuracy testing rails, etc.
To answer your question, I received the photo from Jay so I assume it is one of his rails. That is just my assumption though.

Edit
Jay just sent me an email, he built the blue rails.
