Question

I have 2 lots of Center X that shoot lights out, except for those occasional shots that shoot ~1.5 MOA off in my 54.30 Anschutz BR. I shot it just today. Need to prove to myself that I was not seeing things. Unusable for any kind of competition. A friend who shoots some good lots of Center X shot it in his Voodoo and saw the same thing. Pisses me off to pay that kind of money and end up with crap. I'm done with Lapua rimfire ammo and I'm done with Ely for the same reasons. Currently having the best luck with RWS. We'll see how long that lasts.

Out of curiosity are you using a tuner?

CX lots that "shoot lights out except for..." aren't lots that shoot lights out. They are lots that are characterized by occasional "flyers" or errant rounds. Many rounds shoot as desired, but a few don't -- and that's what makes them disappointing. They are more common than many shooters want to believe.

There may be CX lots that do indeed shoot lights out, but they aren't easy to come by. The odds are that there are more M+ or X-Act lots that will shoot "lights out" but not every lot of higher tier ammo will shoot as desired and there's always a budget to respect.

I think you have to send your gun to Mesa or carry it in and test the lots. Then I think you can find the ones that work in your gun.

Other than the MV differences obtained in pistol barrels, as shown in the factory ballistics charts, what, if anything, makes Lapua (or RWS) pistol ammo different from Lapua (or RWS) rifle ammo?

One difference may be the bullet itself. The third digit in the lot number may reveal whether Pistol King uses a different bullet than the one that's used in CX, M+, and X-Act (a "5"). Does PK have a different number?

This is the only difference I have seen in lot numbers some have a 1 and others a 2 IME the ones with the 2 seems to be better lots as far as how they shoot.
bullet is the same as CX, M+ and Xact if you believe the 3rd digit designates the bullet being used. of all the years I have shot Lapua and SK I could never tell if placed next to each other which was what ammo. I also question the 3rd number as being used to designate the bullet. I have lots going back to 2012 and they all have the number 5.

But as far as numbers go for a lot only one important to me is the last 4 so I can ID the lot.

That's what I have understood as well, but these two lots of Biathlon Xtreme have me scratching my head over it. Both bought last summer, one from Creedmoor, one from Mile High.

never seen that before, hmm maybe that is the way to quickly tell it from regular Biathlon..

Are you saying that since you have lots of CX and M+ going back to 2012 with a number 5 as the third digit it is less likely that this number 5 designates the bullet used in those ammos? It would seem to make more sense that if in fact the "5" is the bullet identification number, that number would remain the same since 2012. Same bullet, same number.

Regarding the third digit, there don't appear to be any CX, M+, or X-Act lots with a third digit other than "5". If it's not the bullet identification number but is instead the loading machine number, that would mean all CX, M+, and X-Act are loaded on one single loading machine -- one that was identified as number 5.

Perhaps it's more likely that Lapua, like Eley, has multiple loading machines. These may be identified by the first digit following the slash in the lot number -- invariably a "5" or a "6" or a "7". See post #22 here https://www.rimfirecentral.com/threads/lapua-lot-analyzer.1156173/page-2

Regarding the "1" or "2" shown on some lot numbers, are these numbers for pistol ammo?

An explanation of Lapua lot numbering is shown below.
