PSA - Noobs and Retail Store Help Rant

GSPV

A failure to plan is a plan for failure.
I recently introduced a coworker to shooting. We shot some clay targets from my spring thrower. He went hog wild. Went straight to Cabela’s here and bought two shotguns.

Then he asked me about deer hunting (in Georgia). He asked me about a Tikka Lite in 6.5 CM that he could get a great deal on. I swallowed my contrarian nature and told him to go for it. He also bought a Nikon scope. He brought it to me and I mounted and bore sighted it for him. He shot some and liked it.

He then discovered that he’d gotten a different scope than he wanted. He went back and swapped it out.

While there he looked at buying some more ammo. The guy helping him gave him the impression that he could shoot 6 CM in his 6.5 CM. I don’t know what that was all about. But he left with that idea and seem to find backup on the web.

Holy crap, Batman. God save us from enthusiastic noobs and retail help that either doesn’t know crap or can’t communicate clearly.

Rant over.

I have seen guys try to use 45acp in a 45 colt revolver. I have seen guys fire 270 in 30-06 while hunting. I have found 300 win mag brass that had been fired in a weatherby chamber.
Idiocy is out there everywhere. I seem to find a lot of it at public ranges this time of year.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of disinformation out there. To become an expert on the internet, you need only have a computer and sound like you know what you are talking about. They carry no liability and most of the time, very little knowledge.
Sadly, many retail clerks learn from the internet or from second or third hand knowledge. I rarely listen to them.
Sadly, the old saying believe 10% of what you hear and 5% of what you read and you will be fine, seems to ring true.

Today the guy is talking to me and I can’t get through to him about windage and elevation adjustments.

Turns out that the mental hang up is that the retail clerk that put the scope on boresighted it in with one of those mess-up-my-crown laser deals and told him that it would be dead nuts on at 100 yards. Not that it would be good enough to be on paper...that it was “dead nuts on”. SMH.

I overheard a Cabela's shirt tell a guy a 150 lb. crossbow wasn't enough for whitetail deer. Maybe the deer I killed with a Parker 150 thought it was a 175.
yeah I am sure it thought it was a 175--I always ask the deer how their death experience was to gain insight and make the experience better for the next one...

And "this guy" is your friend? I'm not understanding the argumentative and somewhat resentful attitude.
That said, I have dealt with some that argue in an effort to learn.

if it's the type of boresighter I'm thinking about, it fits on the crown with a magnetic base, unless the barrel is cut PERFECT you would need a target the size of a piece of plywood, 4'x8'
I got one , not worth EL TORO CACA,,

Nope he said it stuck down into the muzzle. It’s a great way to mess up your crown and then you have a problem that is tough to figure out.

I have one of the Wheeler magnetic bore sighters. Has always got me on paper at 100 except for a friend’s $600 AR. I have all custom rifles so it’s good for me.

Yeah, he’s a work friend that I’m trying to bring along into our sport. He’s just hasn’t figured out that when I say “that’s bad”, it’s factually bad, not just my opinion.

WOW! You are her, telling us about a work 'friend' who is 'learning', via the interdnet, and You are going to learn to chamber on your new to you lathe and NO lathe/machine tool experience,,,,,,,,, on the interdnet! Something ain't right here! Sounds a might hypocritical to me.....

it was the Wheeler I was talking about, barrel cut right, its good, BUT then there is the arbor type that I do not like at all,,period,,

I’m using the internet to talk to Mike Ezell, Jim Borden, Jerry Sharrett, and a slew of great gunsmiths. Select YouTube for well-respected machinists on how to clean up my lathe, wire a VFD, etc.

You seem to have rushed to judgment that I’m a dumb-a$$. You might want to stick around a while and get to know me before making further rash accusations. You’ll look less like a jerk.
