Primer unavailability and competition shooting

In F-Class we’re shooting too many rounds anyway. I took nearly 500 rounds to the nationals. Used every one of them plus had to borrow a gun and ammo to get through the last day because we needed all mine for the team matches.
I don’t think it really takes that many shots to decide who’s the best on any given weekend. Love the game but it’s got to be the most expensive to play.
How about using the UK system of two competitors to a firing point shooting 10/15 rounds each; less rounds per match and more skill required to read the wind and saving on powder and primers until the shortage is over?

I’m all for pair firing. Love it.

This. Dennis Peterson saved my butt this year and loaned me 1000 CCI400 primers. Had several others offer as well. Nice to shoot with a group of guys that are so willing to help out.

Speaking of saving my butts Alex, I've got a present in the mail for you and Chris for help with my pickup. Should be to you on Wednesday.
That was too generous! Not necessary, but thank you! Now I have a reason to freeze my fingers off this winter!thumbnail (24).jpg

Why wouldn't a distributor who normally would ship out primers to Mom and Pop stores, not look at the profit they could make by moving them on Gunbroker. 120 thousand from one (?) in the last couple of months. These were not primers that were squirreled away for the last few years, they had recent dates.

I really don't want to think about the precedent this is setting, that Gunbroker is the new source for primers.

IMHO distributors ship to a good ole buddy who puts them on GB at an inflated price, then they split the profits.
Yrs back when this same thing happened, I had 3 cases of CCI 22 subsonics ordered. Never got them, but you could find any quantity
you were willing to pay for on GB. I confronted my salesman @ Jerrys,
and his stupid answer as to how these persons got the 22s was"they probably bought them at WalMart". My reply" I'm sure these sellers
collected upward of 20K rds, buying three boxes at a time".

The folks at federal etc. when looking at record gun sales think "let's just keep the same production going"? I can't believe they never have another shift and increase costs to cover. I mean never. Somehow, someone else gets to make another $75 a 1000. I know about the fake Covid story but this always happens.

A well regulated militia might be more important than a gov contract too.

I am all for the less rounds fired in F/Class and other matches.
A few of the Matches this passed year had added relays !
The thought behind this was, enough shoots fired for Classification Cards update .

I see this as being at Sea in a Lifeboat.
The Food and water must last, longer than we think.

Lets all hope for some Sun Shine and less Rain on Our Sport.

How many shifts are they running now?

Every mfr i know including federal is running 24/7 with extra help added. Nothing is idle and nothing is slowed down from 100% production.
cci is making and shipping the maximum number of primers possible and they are going to the distributors. That is where the bubbas get involved

That was my thought. It is very expensive for a company that is already running full out to add more production. It usually means adding equipment, facilities, and people.

If I were running a firearms related company, I would be very leery about adding capacity right now. I think I'd be happy running at full capacity and having a long order file.

During reloading component shortages, the responsibility for acquiring new components falls on the reloader. In order to locate and order the necessary components, it is imperative that one takes advantage of every tool in the box. That means checking a number of online vendors every day, or even several times a day, if necessary. It means checking with any local supplier that might get some in. It means checking threads like this one several times a day, or others here at Accurate Shooter such as the one entitled, "Primers in Stock" in the Reloading forum. Primers are slowly trickling in to a variety of different vendors. I was able to purchase some CCI BR4s from Bass Pro Shops last week following an "In Stock" notice in the "Primer in Stock" thread. Bass Pro Shops also got in some CCI 400s a few days after that. Scheels has also had CCI 450s in stock recently, but that required a phone call to the store to find out. I have also purchased primers off of Gunbroker in the last couple weeks, paying approximately double the going cost before the shortage. That was not great, but I could, so I did. I also unexpectedly happened across some H4895, which I hadn't seen in some time, that surprisingly went for what I perceive to be standard cost (i.e. no ridiculously high mark-up). There are occasionally individuals selling primers on Gunbroker that aren't charging an exceptionally hideous markup, but you have to look through several pages of items that come up when you limit the selection to items available with the "Buy Now" button. Again, it requires some footwork and diligence, but if you really want them, they can be found.

The bottom line is that primers are out there, but it will require some diligence on your part to find them before they are sold out. The good news is that as more shooters such as myself obtain what they need to last for a while, they will not order more as the components become available, freeing them up for those that still haven't found some. Those intent on scalping primers will likely not stop buying them up. However, as others find what they need, the scalpers may well find themselves loaded up with primers that no one will purchase at grossly marked-up prices as the shortage eases. So keep the faith, do your due diligence, and you will find what you need if you really want it badly enough.

As Ned said, I use every resource available to keep my stock up to my liking. And it is good...

There has been zero SP/SR or anything here in central Texas for months... On shipment days my local academy sells out of ammo in 15 minutes now..
Friend of mine lives in Alameda, CA near a Big 5 Sporting Goods store, and has friends who work there. He reports that people line up at the front hour 2 hours before opening on the day after their ammo shipments come in (Tues or Thurs; don't remember which.) The ammo is usually gone in the first 15 minutes or so after opening.
