Primer unavailability and competition shooting

Why wouldn't a distributor who normally would ship out primers to Mom and Pop stores, not look at the profit they could make by moving them on Gunbroker. 120 thousand from one (?) in the last couple of months. These were not primers that were squirreled away for the last few years, they had recent dates.

I really don't want to think about the precedent this is setting, that Gunbroker is the new source for primers.

I always thought that one day I would own a flintlock rifle just for academic reasons. It was never a priority for me. Maybe now is the time!

Don't laugh I have both a Ky Long Rifle Flintlock, and Hawken Plains Rifle Percussion. I think I have seen percussion caps for it.

Three years seems far-fetched to me, but I’m not saying it’s impossible. It would help if people don’t buy 10,000-20,000 when they get the chance. When they start showing back up on the shelves, just buy a few thousand and leave some for the next shooter. I don’t think we’ve all started shooting more and I don’t think they slowed down the factories. I don’t think all these new first time gun owners that we’ve been hearing about are reloaders yet. It’s just some folks are buying a lot more, but it doesn’t seem reasonable that the hoarding will completely consume the supply for three years.

Exactly then going on certain on line sites and selling them for 2-300 a thousand is BS and what worse is the sites allow price gouging. But if shooters wouldn't buy them that would put an end to it

Been looking for a while at various reloading component retailers and it appears to that most everything is gone. Take brief look at Precision Reloading an advertiser here. "Sold Out" is the most common feature for just about any components. Have not looked at Gun Broker, but will be sending friends there. Been telling these guys for years to up their inventories, now have had several people ask me to sell them things. I'm really torn about reselling. Don't consider myself a hoarded or a person looking profit from the misery of others. History told me this would happen again. Can't believe it would take only 4 years. Past two trips to the range, every bench was in use. For years had the range to myself, maybe 1 or 2 friends.

The range I work at has been very busy since this started , alot of new faces... The regular guys are holding back and saving ammo I would guess... But it's crazy that when the shelves are literally bare people are shooting like crazy...

I see the new shooters come out when they can find ammo and burn every round then ask where to get more. Ive bought a couple nice ar rifles in unfired condition over the past year because of ammo shortages. I pass em right on to people who have ammo

During the last one of these hoarding episodes I just shot matches and no practice..
Today I bought two boxes of 224 cal Berger 80.5's. I left two on the shelf for someone else. If you find something try to leave some for the next guy or two.. That will help things get back to normal..I hope..

Luckily, I am within driving distance of a wholesale distributor that I use for my little business. They limit how much of each 'flavor' I can buy,, and in turn, I limit how much I will sell to each shooter. I can tell, it doesn't sit well with some.

By now every one should know to have at least a year supply on hand.
Its an election year. This is not the the first or second time. You couldnt give
an AR away in febuary, 9 mm was 160 per thousand. Everything but Retumbo
was readily available. If you didn't buy the primers you needed at 35 - 40 a thousand
you can wait 8 months or pay the price the prepared are willing to sell at.

These are 'sanctions' placed on Russia and China for their bad behavior, like meddling with elections, unfair trade practices and stealing American technology, placing tarrifs on American made goods, amongst a lot of other things. Which would you rather have, the bad things Russia and China do to the US of A that hurt us all, or primers and Chinese made guns? It ain't my problem if you didn't plan ahead!

Fighting supply is going to put a dent in match shooting. Between big F-Class match cancellations, capacity cutting and primer and powder droughts, I’m sure I’ll be shooting less centerfire next year.

I personally know of more shooters who are scaling back matches than ramping up to attend more, at an easy 3:1 ratio.

2020 is the most fu%ked up year in this country since the end of WWII. i am old enough to have lived through social upheaval in late '60's and early '70's to know this is worse, imho.

Anyone who has been a competitive shooter for more the a few years should be aware to stay a minimum of a full year ahead . Speaking of practice, by far the best practice is shooting matches. Shoot every local match you can if you have a desire to be competitive. While at these matches pay attention to what the folks who are consistently at and near the top are doing. Develops a load in good conditions, practice in less than ideal conditions.

After the last drought, I've tried to maintain 2 1/2 to 3 years supply. As I remember, I was scrounging for stuff for 18 months last time.

I'm seeing AR-15 flying off the shelves right now. Two of the gun stores that I went to are offering 50 rounds with the purchase. That may be the last 50 rounds these new buyers ever see.

Looking around on the web last night, I believe the powder situation has finally hit bottom like the primers.

While not plentiful, I've found powder and bullets more available than primers.

After the last drought, I've tried to maintain 2 1/2 to 3 years supply. As I remember, I was scrounging for stuff for 18 months last time.

I have 3-4 years supply of powder, primers, bullets and brass. I was burned once mid season. Hope not to have that happen ever again

Done lost a couple of so called friends because I won't sell them my primers. All they will do is try and make a killing at a gun show. Not seeing primers but a lot of powder.

It sure is SW. Plus all the stuff everyone hears about I've had a unbelievable amount of stuff going on and then the wind storm clobbered us.
