Primer prices - having a laugh?

That was a very limited production and it's being highly restricted by our government. Consider yourself lucky!.
No worries, I thought you were bringing news or information that I had missed regarding Federal not producing primers domestically. I would have been surprised if that was the case and I was learning it incidentally from your comment.

The problem right now is CCI is the only one in the game. With Remington, Winchester, Wolf, and Federal out of the picture they can demand pretty much any price. I don't know anyone but the current generation and new reloaders that are paying the high prices. They don't know what prices were 5 years ago. And if there's any old fools paying the high prices, shame on you, you should know better. Let's be patient, prices will come down.
just timing and not so....a couple months back feds were available.....

Why do you say CCI is the only one in the game? Please explain.

Ive bought many thousands of primers in the last months from Federal and Winchester.

Watch the ammo "SALES". 'Excess' supply of compiled ammo will be first. Component supply will normalize later. Early indicators suggest supply chain issues across many industries peaked in October last year and began to show signs of improvement in November and December. Labor disruption due to sickness leave from Omicron will likely have caused some issues in Dec and into the new year but that will dissipate as well.

Funnily enough I got this email this morning. "New Low Prices" - ha! Targeted at the short memory crowd.

NEW LOW PRICES ON:

Berger Bullets
Sierra Bullets etc

Just an FYI to a comment above … CCI and Federal are owned by same umbrella Corp; thus really like 1 manufacturer.

Just an old guy’s perspective but the huge increases aren’t due to us old time shooters for the most part…. It’s been driven by hysteria/panic, new shooters/gun owners ( even Libs!) , new reloaders AND greedy flippers of anything shooting related. (Both retailers and individuals)

I d venture a guess that component increases would be 1/2 as much as they currently are if it was only us old timer and existing shooters buying! Sad for our sport and a death sentence if it continues for the long term. Just what the anti gunners want!

When was the last time you saw Federal primers for sale? For the last few month's it's all CCI!
Midway, Midsouth and Target Sport all had federals in the last 48 hours.
Not trying to raise your temp or anything, just saying.

I wonder what the reloaders that shoot in competitions are doing to keep up with the pro shooters who are sponsored and receive their components free or at a greatly reduced cost? The unsponsored shooters have to keep up with their practice schedule if they want to be competitive. At what point will some of them say that their sport is just too expensive and then look for another activity?

I saw this happen to drag racing. I used to be able to afford to race but now the sanctioning body has (over the years) allowed the costs to get completely out of hand. Many racers just can't afford to race anymore.

At 140.00 per k no thanks. People need to stop buying and prices will come down. Simple economics.

Paul
Exactly right. It’s the same thing when someone posts a classified here for an item with a price everyone feels is too high. It sits there for a period of time and doesn’t sell. Then the seller starts dropping the price, sometimes multiple times until it reaches a fair price where someone will buy it.

Retail sellers are no different and anyone who thinks otherwise is not very wise. They can’t afford to let product sit on the shelf for long periods because it costs money to buy it themselves. Inventory sitting on the shelf too long is like loaning someone money and they aren’t paying it back. Eventually it will need to sell whether or not you need to drastically drop or even completely eliminate your profit margin or your books are going to be in the red. Might even have to take a loss if a product can’t sell but getting something is better than nothing. I guarantee Bruno’s is not paying more than $40-$50 per 1K from the manufacturers for primers. If Bruno wants to mark primers up that much then that dirtbag can let them rot on his shelf and eat the loss as far as I’m concerned. Even when prices go back down, I will not buy from vendors that decided to gouge prices on people in the shooting community. I used to buy from Bruno’s but he has now lost my business for life.

I feel badly for those new to the sport. It’s a poor time to be getting started in reloading. I do however have no pity for guys who have been shooting and reloading for years but failed to plan ahead.

It wasn’t two years ago that places actually ran sales on both primers and powder. Some even waived or reduced hazmat charges. I don’t remember anyone complaining that the suppliers should be charging more so they continued to make a fair profit.

What bothers me more me than the shortage and prices is all the complaining about those prices. Sure I wish they were lower but I understand we live in a capitalist society in the greatest country in the world.

When I hear terms like “price gouging” it really upsets me. We live in a free market society. Supply and demand set market prices. Most of the time the system works well. In uncertain times though, unnatural forces skew both the perceived supply and perceived demand. The thing to remember is eventually things get back to normal. Do prices steadily climb over time, yes but that is the case with all goods and services.

Sometimes the rebound is so severe that retailers even run sales or eat hazmat charges just as they did a couple years ago. Imagine that.

Dave.

Glad to hear Federal is back in the mix and I'm sure we'll see Remington back soon as well. CCI is going to keep the Remington name on ammo as well as primers. My posts were in reference to what's happened in the last 18 months. I'm sure we'll be seeing more competition in this area as time goes by. Maybe demand will taper off.

I am set with primers for many years to come and bullets in some calibers for the rest of my life. Always have been so I’m upset for the new shooters or people who haven’t been doing it long enough to know what happened back in 2008.

What you said about capitalism is absolutely true but actions have consequences. There are online vendors and local stores where I live that are selling the same products at normal profit margins despite the supply and demand situation. A person or business can charge whatever they want for their G&S in this country, that’s part of our freedoms. But the flip side of that is who the consumers decide to stay loyal to and purchase those same G&S from in the future. These vendors with crazy high prices might be enjoying life with the profits now, but it could hurt them in the long run.

I will stay loyal to the online vendors and local dealers who are not jacking prices up 100-300%. The rest will not receive another dime of my money for as long as I live. That’s MY freedom on the consumer side of capitalism.
