Primer Question

I did a small rifle primer test about 1.5 years ago.
Loaded up the same round, 6 CM, 40.6gr, H4350, 105gr match.
These reading are from the Silver Mountain target system we have on the 1000 yd range.

The readings in FPS were at the target, NOT muzzle.

For my results the primers didn't really make a big difference.

For what it's worth, Sportsmans Warehouse has just starting selling primers by the 1000. They offered me 1000 Federal LR for $60.00. They had a lot on hand. Good luck in your search.

Living in NY - I've been buying reloading components on line . No restrictions yet.
Quiet, don’t poke the bear, they don’t need any ideas. (Although I’m sure it’s in their bag of tricks). I live there too.

Although I have never bought from them Runnings has had reloading components including primers.

Miwall has CCI lg rifle NATO # 34, What's the difference between them and CCI #200? The do want $50+ shipping and hazmat, seems high but it's CA.

84 years old means nothing.
The current back to back NBRSA national score winner is 84 shows no signs of slowing down, the last time I saw him, and probably uses 4-5,000 primers a year.

Froggy, 84 years of being frugal. I am in great shape and can do almost anything just slowly. Just lost the last of my 4 best friends of over 70 years. I am not immortal! Kids are not really interested, and I just don't need $1K primers on hand. Found some CCI NATO but understand they are really magnum and maybe a little harder cup.

In my opinion, almost any gun can be tuned to any primer. Just adjust load and shoot. While your gun may prefer one over the other for the highest standards of precision, most people can't shoot the difference.

If you are shooting bench rest, this doesn't apply.

bsekf, I'm only 71 and can't do what I did 5 years ago. The good lord showed me a few years ago none of us are immortal (cancer) now if I need or see something I want I go for it. Two daughters neither of which shoot and both have good jobs and college educations that I paid for them, so I don't owe them an inheritance.
Plus I have never seen a hearse pulling a bank vault.

yep you can't take it with you

Disclaimer: I am an old guy, 84, and will never use 5000 primers, really 10,000 because I need sm and lg. So I am looking for a 1000 of each.

Have always used CCI 400, 200, Br2 and Br4. Because of the shortage I am dropping back to CCI 200 and 400. I don't seem to find a reliable supplier that has both CCI 200 and 400 in stock at the same time and paying double hazmat is unproductive. Cost of components has reduced my shooting 90%.

Just how much difference is there between the different primer brands? Will I notice a significant accuracy/velocity change/POI change between CCI - Federal - Rem - Win? Is there really any difference? Did hear the Grinex ?? are larger, I don't want them.

Bill
What do you use the rifle for?

I’ve found that in almost every situation with a Remington 9-1/2 primer I got my best performance. Small rifle the 7-1/2s are best. I’ve done testing with many different guns and chamberings changing NOTHING but primers and found NOTHING better than 9-1/2 and 7-1/2s. Others were pretty close, but none better. Your mileage may vary.
I’ve never had to modify powder charges because of a primer change and I’ve used most anything I could lay my hands on over the years.

The primers are definitely showing signs of staying on the shelves and in stock longer - so I think better times are ahead (at least for a while) on primer availability. Regarding the various primers, (take shooting in a .223 for example), the FPS spread between most makes are only about 40 FPS and, in some cases, the magnum primers put out slower speeds that the standard primers. With a given powder load and bullet, you will often notice a difference in pattern placement and size, along with the minor velocity change when changing primers. That said, altering the powder amount can often bring a replacement primer into tune similar to what you were shooting. In some of my loads on certain rifles, I can substitute a Remington 7 1/2 with A Russian Tula or a Federal Match and there will be almost no discernable difference in pattern or placement. It also depends on what you are using the primers for, such as "serious" targets or hunting, and whether you shoot hot loads or not. I'd go thick cup or magnum primer in a semi-auto or if you run hot loads. Other than that - I'd not worry too much about brand unless very serious target work is involved. You can usually tune any of the primers to get close to what you want them to do by altering powder charge.

Old and set in my ways, Been using CCI BR and standard for 30years and hate to change. Already decided I'll drop the Br's due to price. Sorry I passed on Rem 9 1/2, guess I'll just grab what is available. Probably be illegal to shoot in NYS shortly anyway.
