"Out Dated" .308 Win

Wasn't there some guy in SR BR who was smoking everyone with a 30-30 for a few years? Kinda puts things in perspective when you think about that.

I do still have irrational fear/anger towards certain cartridges though.

Yup, his name is Michael Turner, using his own made action. This past winter he finished my 30-30 prone gun in a McM stock, Mo Defina action, 12 T Lederer barrel to shoot 168 Berger Hybrids at mid range. Velocity testing we ran the 168 B H comfortably at 2750 when Mike came by with my rifle for testing.

His shoots this, left over ammo.

Creedmoor vs 308 is just 6.5 vs .30 or 6mm vs .30. Accuracy potential is probably not much different but the lighter bullets produce less recoil and are easier to shoot.
I have dedicated target rifles in 303 British and 30/40 Krag. I also have two in 6.5 Creedmoor and 4 in 308 Winchester. All shoot about the same. I have two BR rifles. One is a 308 and the other a 6BR. They are also pretty even with the 6 having a slight edge.
Years back, I shot the 303 in a 300 meter ISSF match and finished second to a 6BR (one point down). The 30/40 shoots about the same and I have fired a bunch of groups around 1 1/2 inches or less at 300 meters. I have a target here somewhere with three consecutive 5-shot groups under 3/8" at 100; from the 303. The point is, cartridges don't matter too much. Rifles matter and having the ability to pull the trigger at the right time matters. WH

Thanks for the update - intermediate role ? - I am not a particular fan of the .308 but have no reason to condemn it - It has its place. Will this (6.5 CM machine gun) result in buckets of cheap range brass? I heard they made a few Browning Auto Rifles in 6.5X55.
It is meant to perform the Light Machine Gun role (same as the old M60). No way of knowing how fast it will be implemented beyond SOCOM, or what else is already in the works, but the die is cast.

Big Army has seen the light on the 6.5 caliber.

Hope it fills the role adequately . I know....about the "Hit Power" of a .308 at range , so I'll wait for the jury to come back on this new one . Velocity doesn't necessarily translate to "Hit Power" . For those old enough to remember ; the "plastic fantastic" , made by Mattel was supposed to be the Be All - End All , too .....There's a lot of names on a Wall in the District of Corruption , because of "THAT" decision .

So what does the 6cm do that a 243 win don’t do??
Fits better in a magazine with a 107/110 gr bullet seated.
30* shoulder keeps brass growth to minimum
possibly less throat erosion due to the “turbulence point” being in the neck. (likely can of worms discussion)

Was at a private range this morning talking to a fellow shooter about a new 308 I am having built. When a younger shooter stated "That cartridge is out dated, you are wasting your money." To which I replied "Really?". Was then informed the 6 Creedmoor is where its at. Well, had one of my other "outdated" 308's on the bench. I offered to set two 300 yd F Class targets at 300 for a friendly wager. My outdated 308 vs his 6 Needmoor for $1.00 a point difference for 10 rounds. He looked at me for a long moment and said "I better not, you probably know how to shoot that thing." Been cracking up all day over "OUT DATED".
Why can’t these mouth’s ever take the bet. I would have really liked to see the roll of bills that you would of walked off with.

I sold my excellent shooting PRS. 308 outdated rifle this year. The guy that bought it never batted and eye when he asked how much and I told him, he simply said, quickly, I'll take it. He bought a smoker. I shoot 1000 yard FTR with my 30" .308 and always will.

It’s pretty tough to argue any caliber is “obsolete” when the examples of longevity abound. The 9mm dates go 1903 and is still the world’s most common handgun caliber.
Another example would be the steadily growing popularity of the 45-70.

Caveat......I am a .308 guy. That being said, if you go into a Sporting Goods store, in the fishing dept., you will find lures by the hundreds. Every one is designed to catch fish...(if you learn to use them properly) but they are also designed to catch fishermen :). The same is true with all the different rifle calibers. We all have our favorites, and if we learn to use them properly and match the caliber to the task at hand, all will perform.

Without a bipod, you can have 5+ additional pounds of barreled action, between TR and Open. That’s a lot of rigidity and bbl length.

There’s no 2021 SWN to prepare for and I’m looking to occupy some of that time on the side with an Open weight .308, twists for 200s, and heavies this year, just for fun.

If the Ferrari doesn't have to be towed to the shop...

They are slow pokes, but the 200’s will improve my open wind reading with longer brass and barrel life and the 250 A-Tips are so unbelievably consistent and high BC, I just want to see what they are actually capable of from a .308 case in a heavy and stable gun.

I wanted a Ferrari, just a regular one. Used. I got into this stuff instead, so I couldn’t say how much gear one holds. I do know that station wagon rear can hold a Ferrari’s worth of guns.

This will be really interesting. I look forward to seeing the results.

Given it'll be cooler for the next few months, get them cranked up with some RL17.

I ordered one of the two barrels this morning. 33” 5R Krieger 1.45” to 1.0” MTU 10 twist from Bruno’s on hand stock. Roughly that’s my F-Open dimension (shorter but good for .308) so that one’s imminent. The 8 twist I need i will have to wait on.
