On beam scales part two

Scott , you say the RCBS 505 is a no-go . I have an Ohaus 505 Made in N.J. ..... Is this the same as the RCBS and also no-go ?

Thanks. I tried some small neodymium magnets in my M5, but they didn't work well. Now I see why.

FWIW I am not concerned so much with sensitivity (both my stock M5 and 5-0-5 register a single grain), but more with repeatability and drift.

If they didn't work well, did you make sure that the magnetic fields were aligned?

They need to be, NS- [] -NS... NOT, NS- [] -SN The two inner poles of the magnets must be attracting each other so the copper blade cuts through the flux lines.... If the two south or north poles are facing each other, then there is no magnetic field to act on the copper blade.

Actually, it was not nearly so simple. I only had some very small cylindrical neodymium magnets, and I used two magnets on each side of the blade, and used strips of sheet steel to tie each pair together. Can't be sure now of the polarity. I need to start over with single larger magnets on each side.

Is a RCBS 502 stamped made in New Jersey by Ohaus good for tuning

Scott
At some point I'm going to have to send you the old 5-0-5 I bought off e bay. It won't repeat and doesn't return to zero most of the time even after a good cleaning.

Yes, the middle poise rests on a folded flat section and also on the top portion of the slot that is cut in it. The issue is that there some variability in how that poise positions itself as the beam moves. This causes a lack of repeatability. Moreover, that poise is easily dislodged. That poise adjusts in whole grain increments! Yikes!

Scott, couldn't a new "dangling" poise be fabricated to replace the OEM middle poise? It would be tricky, I suppose, to get its mass just right, but possible?

It WAS ~40 years ago. Look for some round ones.

Uh huh. But the toy's magnets might well be better than the round ones anyway, I need to try them. And, I'll still have the toy dogs if I decide not to re-purpose them. My cat will probably love them. :p And I have access to neodymiums of various flavors.
