On beam scales part two

Scott,
Enjoyed our conversation the other evening. I respect the advice about the M5, however, with a Sartorius and two Chargemasters I am just finding it difficult to put that much in an analog scale at the moment. I took a close look at the like new, but old, RCBS/OHAUS 1010 that I have. The box says MADE IN USA on the bottom and the casting on the bottom of the scale says essentially Made by Ohaus in New Jersey. I know you recommend the M5, however, aside from the lack of primary need there is a rather heavy sentimental attachment to this 1010. How big of compromise is a 1010 relative to a RCBS 502? I am looking at a lot, a sales lot, of Reloading gear that has an old RCBS 502 in box. Is there anything in specific to look for? Which would you tune first the 1010 or the 502?

Hi Matt. the 10-10 will likely have better linearity. The 502 will likely tune up to be more sensitive. I'm happy to work on either.

:rolleyes: Heard a guy griping recently how his Sartorius scale was still not getting his loads uniform enough with ES/SD's in the low single digits (where he wanted them). What was he using to measure his speeds? An old Shooting Chrony that was so beat up he had to wiggle wires to get it to read. :(:(:eek:

Yeah, it amazes me how some shooters never consider the accuracy of their measuring equipment. If you are using a chrono with 2 ft screen spacing, once you get below 15fps for es, you are within the margin of error.

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Hi all, sorry to get here late but I haven't seen if a Lyman D 7 is worth tuning. I have been using for many years and have kept it clean and cared for. I have used it to check my electronic scale that I now only use to throw close and trickle up. I don't do enough competition shooting to buy a 600 dollar analytic scale. What do you think?

Nice set up. I do mine the same way except i push the comp. back a ways and turn the scale so it is long ways so the only thing in front of me is the tray. It seems to make placing the tray a bit easier for me and loosens up a good bit more area on the table......

Hi, Lyman changed the pivot knives on the D7. They are ground at a very steep angle and also are considerably smaller in height. Neither of these is desirable for high sensitivity.

Hi, I have a Lyman pro500 which came in a loading kit when I started hand loading and a RCBS 502 built in the USA which I bought by its self as the Lyman plastic base didn't do much for my confidence. They both repeat well and hold zero. After reading this thread the 502 seems it would be more reliable though the Lyman got a good rap too does that extend to the pro 500 as well? I'm trying to reduce the SD and ES and one of the things I want to do is get away from the electronic scales I'm using as they tend to climb a bit and having to re calibrate them all the time is getting to be an issue. Especially when the beam scales are just sitting there and even though the elec scales are accurate the beam scales seem to be a lot less messing around in that sense.

Scott,

I have read of chaps changing the magnets in their M5 scales. I do notice the damping effect is different than my 5-0-5. Do you do anything w/ the M5 magnets? And what do chaps perceive as being bad about the damping AFAYK?

About sensitive and repeat. If the beam returns to the same line with same test weight does this mean it is sensitive? The beam changes with 1 granule of us 869, does this have to do with sensitivity? Is there a test for sensitivity? Does this have something to do with the beam sticking at the empty bottom position when minimal weight is added? Thanks for the help.

Scott , I have an Ohaus 1005 that looks exactly like my Lyman M5. Are they in fact twins or are there differences ?

Damping isn't bad unless it decreases sensitivity to the point where it creates variation. I change out magnets only if there appears to be a problem caused by them.

Hi. Returning to the same point on the scale body is repeatability. Changing position with added mass is sensitivity. You want both! If your scale is bugging you, I can fix it.

Your 502 is worth working over. The Lyman 500 is not.
