On beam scales part two

Any differences between an old vs a new RCBS 502 scale? Just wondering if they share the same problem as the 10-10 where the new ones are made in Mexico and aren't as good.

Scott,

I have read of chaps changing the magnets in their M5 scales. I do notice the damping effect is different than my 5-0-5. Do you do anything w/ the M5 magnets? And what do chaps perceive as being bad about the damping AFAYK?

I changed the magnets in my M-5 and it is great. It does NOT effect the sensitivity or accuracy.

Could you elaborate - what type magnets did you use, and why did you switch?

I don't recall what kind of magnets they are for sure, (it was ~ 40 years ago ??)... but I "think" they came from those little "Scotty Dog" toys.

They are good ones. The magnets are located inside of the housing that the blade on the beam rides in - under the scale, there is a screw - loosen and remove that and the housing will come off.

I switched because the originals were whimpy and the beam took three weeks to settle. With these, the beam comes to a dead stop in 1.5 seconds.

The magnets are oriented like this - let them attract themselves together, then pull them apart and put them in the scale so they are facing each other the same way - this way, the lines of magnetism are going through the space that the copper dampening blade passes, for maximum hysteresis.

I wedged them in there with balls of paper (probably toilet paper), cuz I didn't know if they would work-out well. They have been there all this time, without any problems.

The sensitivity is excellent - the beam will move with one granule of H-322, which is equal to 0.0059 (or 6/1000 ths) of a grain of powder.

My 10/10 is stamped as "Manufactured by Ohaus Scale Company" in New Jersey. Is it a suitable candidate for tuning? Also there is a small chip in the knife blade. Can you replace or repair that as well?

My main issue with the modern 505 is the safety issue. The middle poise is insanely easy to dislodge. There is no good reason to own one other than it being free.

And I was just about to check your thoughts on my old 505 ;-)

Then I looked at pictures of a 505 and realized I've got a RCBS 5-10 with the rotary dial for fine adjustment. Any thoughts on this one?

Also is there any automatic dispenser that's worth buying? By that I mean one that's accurate and repeatable enough to not need to weight each charge on another scale.

I used one 1/2x1/2x 1/4 N40 neodymium in my old tuned D5. With one it requires 4 seconds to zero with only a tenth overshoot by the pointer-gradated scale until it settles. With two it would take 20 seconds or longer. It only a guess but probably N30s may be a better choice depending on the scale and their orientation. Here is a video using the Ns in a Lee.
I didn't bother trying the Ns when I tuned my 505, the original magnets work well enough,

I was disappointed too that my old Ohaus made RCBS 505 wasn't suitable for tuning. The scale has always checked good and I've shot some tiny groups with my 22-250 with charges thrown from that scale.

That being said I started looking at M5's, also found a 10-0-5 but it wasn't complete. What I wound up buying was a Ohaus 505, it's not like my three poise RCBS, more like the M5 with a large pan. This scale is red with a cover like the M5. I got this one in mint condition with the original box for about $25 less than the M5's are going for.

BTW does anyone have a production time line for Ohaus reloading scales?

I use a Parker tuned Ohaus 10-10.. I have a laptop computer and see these camera setups and think that would make things easier.. Who has one and what camera would you use? I looked on Ebay and everything is made to hook on the screen, Obviously I would want something to stand in front of the scale..

Your red 505 was the original 505 scale and was made in the mid to late 1960s.It should tune up beautifully.

I've just been doing some experiments with a really cheap camera and equally cheap android tablet. They work perfectly and the whole lot combined cost less than $50.

Thanks. I tried some small neodymium magnets in my M5, but they didn't work well. Now I see why.

FWIW I am not concerned so much with sensitivity (both my stock M5 and 5-0-5 register a single grain), but more with repeatability and drift.
