Purely out of curiosity, why rework the forend? Seems like the wide, flat forend would be more stable off of a tripod or portable bench.
I double dog dare ya to spray a couple coats of emerald green candy on it before clearing.I shot it with laquer sanding sealer yesterday. It will get final sanded and then auto 2k spray can clear coat.

Check out Lime Line, I believe they have candy basecoat in aerosol cans.
The candy will add depth and richness to an already pretty stock yet leave the wood grain visible.
