New to 6MM BR

Hi All,

I am a new 6MM BR owner.

I purchased the rifle for some local 300-600 yard competitions. the 300 yd range is already built and the club wants to do an extension out to 600 yards in the very near future.

My rifle is a Savage F-Class 6MM BR 1-8 twist 30" barrel.

I would like to shoot some 68 gr bullets in the 2-300yd matches. My question is have you had good accuracy with the 68 grain bullets in the 1-8 twist barrels. I have read that a fast twist can still shot a light grain bullet very well. I would like to hear from you if you have shot with 68 gr in a 8 twist barrel. Any suggestions?

( I may be able to get some old 68 gr Estes bullets?? were thes good shooting bullets??)

I am thinking I will try the 95 grain Sierra Tipped Match Kings in any matches 400-600 yards. Possibly I will move up to the 107 gr Match Kings?

I will be using Laupa 6MM BR brass. Redding competition seating die and Type S bushing FL sizing Die.

I have been reloading for appx 5 years now. (223 rem & 204 Ruger)

As I am new to the 6MM BR any words of wisdom are Appreciated.

Thanks,
FoxGuy

Yes the Estes bullets were very good they should work fine, your on the right track with a heavier bullet for the longer distance.....the 8 twist will work good with the heavier bullets its a crap shoot with lighter ones seen some shoot really good others not so much,,,

I have owned the exact same rifle you have just purchased:
they are great rifles for the price.
this rifle is what go me all in trouble with my obsession for shooting small groups.
for 200-300 yd matches: I did really well with simple load of :
berger 105 vld target bullets, CCI BR4 primers, 28.3 gr of varget. be careful not to go up too much more with this savage model, when i got to about 29 gr varget i had some pressure signs.
loaded at 0.010 jammed, it shot quite well.
if you need any help feel free to get a hold of me
have fun with your savage.

I have the same rifle - bought almost 2 years ago. I too run a mild load:
28.0 - 28.5gr Varget, Berger 105 VLD or 105 Hybrid, CCI 450 primer, Lapua brass.
When I ran more than 29.3gr Varget I would experience heavy bolt lift - so I didn't go past 29.3gr.

But this past weekend, at the local club 600 yard monthly match, i met a couple who bought 2 new matching Savage 12 F 6BR rifles this past summer. They are able to load more than 30.5gr Varget + Sierra 107 HPBT + CCI 450s w/o any pressure signs. They shoot really well - 600 yards, 10 shot groups per target usually under 4 inches (aggregate over 2 targets [20 shots]). Many times closer to 3 inch aggregates - pretty good for just starting out.

I don't know if there is something different with the newer Savage 12 F 6BR rifles - but I could not run anywhere close to that much powder...

Maybe the free bore was changed..............????????

You'll probably do better shooting the 105-108gr Bullets at all distances. The longer the range the more wind will effect the bullet.
I find the bullet & load that I want & does well and shoot nothing else. Makes it easier when I’m shooting at varying distances to know the load so well. Not much thinking involved.

You will not know until you try the light bullets. I would try them king a rough seating test going from a hard jam and backing off .005 at least to .03 out and then fine tune. They may surprise you.

I recently made the leap to a custom build Savage too, purchasing a used Savage target action 6mmBR with a Brux 4 groove, 8 twist in 28 in. The rifle is a Fred Moro build in a SSS stock, T&T'd, very light trigger pull. I bought this thinking I'd shoot 80 to 88 gr Bergers instead of the 107 SMK's I shoot out of a 6br I built.

Once I had the bullets in hand and began load work ups in preparation for 100 yd score competition I found that the 80's, 88's and 107's shot to the same precision but if the wind was a factor, the 107's shot better than the lighter bullets. My wind reading skills aside, the evidence was clear that the heavier bullets were superior out of my 8 twist.

A slower twist would likely favor the lighter bullets at a higher velocity, but I'm not in a position to order a new barrel when my rig is winning out over a lot of shooters with full custom 30BR's in score matches.
