6MM BR 68gr Berger and VV N135 Powder ?

Hi, I'm new to loading the 6MM BR and after reading a lot of messages here have decided to load up some of the 6MM 68 gr Bergers with VV N135 powder.

I have a Question to those who have loaded with the VV N135 powder. How much of a problem do loaders had with developing a load at say 65-70 degrees, getting excellent group results(say 3/8" minute moa) and then trying to shoot the load at say 90 degrees- was your group size still as good as the results you were getting at the 65-70 degrees?

I should have the VV N135 next week and am looking forward to loading up some loads and testing the loads for good groups.

Savage 6MM BR ,1-8 twist, "F" class 30 inch barrel.

(I will be loading Sierra 107gr bullets in the future with Varget. I just wanted to start with the 68 gr bullets,) 80 gr Berger bullets will also be in my future. :)

Thanks

Hi all,

I did a search on google on Vihtavuori temperature sensitivity and found a thread on this site talking about Vihtavuori powders sensitivity to temperature changes. The VV N1XX line of powders are a single base powder and are fairly insensitive to temperature changes. The VV 5XX is not a single base powder and is more sensitive to temperature changes.

Google helps me to find answers on subjects I am curios about. Sometimes I just have to do the Search.

Thanks

I have a winter and a summer load for my 6mmBR using 135 powder because I found it does make a difference. Winter load is based on temps in the 40-50 degree range and summer load is based on 75 degrees. That is how it worked out for me...but with all rifles who knows until you try.

Consider that when some think temperature sensitivity they thing ambient temperature changes. The other issue is chamber temperature when you are shooting a number of shots at a range. If you load a round and then let it sit in a warm/hot chamber and cook, then the powder will heat up. Some will put their loaded rounds in a cooler to let them sit at a uniform temperature until time to shoot. Then you only have to worry about how long they sit in the chamber.

RonAKA,

Thanks for reminding us that we also have to be aware of this. I know I usually try to keep my ammo in the shade until shoot time. I may have to start using a cooler to keep the heat off of it ??

Dang, I went to 2 Large sporting goods stores looking for the VV N135. Neither one had it in stock. (I had called several local SG stores looking for it earlier). Decided if I wanted some I had better get it ordered. I'm thinking I should have it in another week??, I hope that we have some warm days left this fall for load testing.

In my experience, N135 is a good powder for the bullets in the 65-75gr range. That being said, have you considered trying 8208?:) WD

Hi WyleWD,

the 8208 is a powder that I have recently added to my Powder list. I will probably be trying it in the future. Do you have Load Data for berger 68 gr FB bullet using the 8208?

I started with H322 in my 6BR with the 68 grain Berger bullets. I found it was a bit too fast, and went to Varget. I have some loaded up with 34.2 grains of N135 to see how they will do, but have not tested them yet, and can't comment from N135 experience. I try to hit 3400-3420 fps for best accuracy.

This is an example of three consecutive 3 shot groups I got with Varget. I do not get as good with the 80 grain Bergers. That is the max weight I can shoot with my 12 twist barrel.

RonAKA,

Thanks for the picture of the Target, and thanks for additional information on your Load testing.

I would like to hire you to measure my groups in competition. JamesA zero group 001.JPG
The above group is a 5-shot group with a 6mm PPC and it mesures .121 as measured by George Kelbly, Jr.

Yes, I probably used a nominal .243 instead of a measured single shot diameter. I can't remember...

I shoot Accurate 2495 with the Bart’s 65 grn or the Bart’s 80 grn in my 1-12 twist BR. The throat is .060.
33.5 grns with the 80, 34.5 with the 65, jumping both around .020.

I might be the only person in the Country using 2495. I tried it on a whim, and was pleasantly surprised.

by the way. You will find that 135 in a BR acts like 133 in a PPC. It is more sensitive to humidity swings more than temperature when trying to achieve the best agging capability.

25 years when I started in shortrange br I had a 6br. Curious to see if I could compete with the ppcs and to learn I attended the 3 day IBS school. Vv135 and 68 gr Bergers was my load. Until the last group on the third day when I was edged out of top spot I was more than holding my own with a 68 gr and vv135. Built a second br in a 10 twist and used 88 Bergers to do very well at groundhog matches at 500 yds. I like VV135 in the BR case.

Old thread but I'll make a comment. My 12tw 6BR shoots very well with N135 and Bart's 80 Dom.
6Dasher 8tw I shoot 105 Gungnir at 2980 with Varget.
Just shot these two targets at 300 yd with gusting head/cross wind. Lots of good powders and bullets.
I've become very fond of Bart's bullets and N135 for BR. Shot lots of 1's and 2's at 100 yds.

Just now today tested the 68 gr. FB Bergers with 31.0 ,32.0 & 33.0 gr. of VV-N135 seated at .010 off the lands with Lapua once fired cases in my Rem 40X 6mmBR 1 - 14 Tw. 24 inch barrel. CCI BR-4 Primers. Looks like 31.0 gr. is the winner with a 5 shot group measuring .142. 32.0 gr. opened up to .258 and 33.0 gr. was close to that as well.
(CAUTION - WORK UP YOUR LOADS)
