New hornady ELD-VT bullets

Thing I would worry about is the front of the bullets collapsing white seating them. I had to make special seating stems because the 68 and 75gr hpbt bullets deformed from seating in the 223.

Received this info from Hornady. OAL of the 6mm 80g VT
Thank you for reaching out. That OAL is 1.170. Minimum twist rate is 1:8

Thank you,

Hornady/SnapSafe Tech Team
Via velocity, "you can't get there from here" . . . while the notion persists, that a couple hundred FPS significantly affects Sg, this is one of the four "MMMM's" (Myth, Misconception, Misinformation, Marketing) - reality to follow . . .

Using the length, per Ranger188, & running some "make-believe" dimensions (BT length & angle, nose radius, me'plat diameter, etc.) for a 1.170" long .224 caliber bullet weighing 62 Gr., and featuring a 0.010" me'plat diameter, 10.2 specific gravity of construction calls for a 72 Gr. bullet. For the 72 Gr. weight and this length, the great Tioga Engineering BULLET DESIGN program specs a twist rate of 1: 7.4" (Remember, this bullet is of make-believe dimensions). This, at sea-level Std conditions and 3,000 FPS MV, would produce Sg 1.5.

Maintaining the geometry and 3K FPS MV , of the the 72 Gr. bullet, while reducing the weight to 62 Gr., requires reducing the specific gravity of construction to 8.4, which, for Sg 1.5, results in needing a 1: 6.5" twist. Via magical cartridge/powder combination, 4,500 FPS MV would require 1: 6.7" twist.

The issue is the overturning moment: the lighter bullet [weight] makes for a longer "lever" . . . for reliable Sg, velocity, is relatively meaningless. ;) The Hornady folks likely did their home-work. RG

B4 the spamming begins, no, these numbers are not exact, however, altering them to match reality, will not significantly change the twist rate requirements. And, exiting at Sg 1.4 wouldn't be a bad thing - just the lowest Sg figure that yours truly would opt for.;)

Soooooo true! Each of the 'Four M's' deserves to have a stake through it's heart.

While not a big Hornady fan, with a good barrel with an appropriate free bore length and diameter, the 87 VMax has shot well in every 6mm chambering I've tried them in. Twist rates from 9 to 12 and chambers in 243W, 243 AI, 6MM Jet, 6MM Rem., 6 Ackley and a couple of 6BR's.

In an unknown barrel, the Nosler 70 BTip and the 87 VMax are the first two non-BR quality bullets I try.

Good shootin'. :) -Al

I'm not saying that they didn't used to shoot, I'm saying that they don't shoot now. The older bullets apparently shot very well. The newer bullets not so much.

There's two sleeves of 500 here made in early 2023. No accuracy issues. These were shot this Summer in both factory and after market barrels.

Looks like a cool bullet that really could have potential. Hornady's hit or miss on bullets and lots is why I don't like shooting them anymore. I have just heard too many issues with them lot to lot and bullet to bullet. Some seem to be home runs, while others are very lacking. If they could get their QC and overall designs to be consistent, I think they'd be great bullets. It would be nice if they could consistently make bullets that were actually "Match Grade". Off topic, but their 6.5 147s are a clear example. Some people swore by them, while others blew them up and had a lot of problems. I know for sure that bullet has multiple "versions" and Litz tested one lot and found them to be very lacking in BC consistency. I just don't see the point in gambling when there's better bullets available.

But in this case, there aren't better bullets available. Availability is kind of the issue.

Yeah I understand that point. I am disappointed in that as well. I have had decent luck with BTHPs on groundhogs. Might be worth trying something from Berger or others.

Berger hasn't made their 6mm 80 grain varmint bullet in years. And from what I was told, they have no plans to make any in the future.
