My CCW qualification

I am a NC Justice Academy Certified CCW instructor, Certified NRA Basic Pistol Instructor, 40 year USPSA competitor, 3 Gun competitor, and a 28 year LEO veteran. I have been very fortunate to be able to shoot with some of the absolute worlds best, Military and Civilian. I do understand that too some individuals, a class may be boring and it may seem useless to some. Don't be so arrogant and self centered and carry a mind set that you can't learn anything. You are short changing yourself and possibly create problems for other that do want to learn. The simple reason it is called a class. The law requires it in most states. Some states do not.

I hope that anyone that gets their CCW, never has to get into a confrontation and lethal force has to be used. If it is the case that lethal force has to be used, I pray the victim has the "Mind Set" to end the threat. It is not the same as shooting a piece of paper or cardboard that does not shoot back. You have to be and must be honest with yourself and ask yourself, can you take another humans life. You need to know that answer in your mind before you enter into being a CCW permit holder. The permit will not, and does not put a giant S on your chest.

Just remember a couple of things, a bullet comes out of the barrel and it does not come back, no reset button. Second, a bullet has no eyes, it does not see race, color, religion, male, female, adult or child, innocent bystander, etc. A few things to consider in being a CCW permit holder. Use your right that has been granted to you by the law and be alert and stay safe.

When I went to LEO firearms instructor school, the told us "This is not a shooting school, your here based on your scores, we're here to teach you how to impart your skills on others."

I believe that anyone going into a CC course should already be proficient and looking to be aware of the laws that cover carrying a firearm. At least shoot into a pie plate at 15 yards. It's not just about getting permit but knowing the law and having the mindset to realize what a deadly force encounter entails.

Practice, practice, practice, be proficient, know the law and situational awareness.

I'm in a "shall issue" state also.
But we don't have the classroom or qualification requirements.

Go to sheriffs office, fill out your paperwork with check for $25 and grab a chair while they run your background.
Good for 5 years.

I took a class on my own dime as i feel training only helps.

I also got a membership with USCCA for the incase i do need to draw my weapon.

Very similar here, no class/instruction, no qualification, good for 5yrs. Complete the form, pay the fees, wait for and get fingerprinted, CCW permit arrives in mail.

I agree with everything you wrote, and much obliged. FWIW of the classroom session I did state it "was mostly about legal issues and scenarios, actually very informative and useful" so I hope I didn't sound condescending or resentful.

I pray I never have to pull a trigger on anyone. That said, there have arisen situations where I felt compelled to jam a small handgun into a pocket before venturing forth, which without a CCW would have been illegal.

Most important thing you can do, especially in a state with blue judges, is get CCW insurance from X insurance, not some third party club where they have a policy and may help you if they want. You have insurance on vehicles and your house, and youre the named insured on the policy, why would you trust your freedom and fortune to a policy that doesnt even have your name as the insured?

I think there should be a way to use creds from one state to the other.

Many states recognize and reciprocate re: CCWs from other states for travelers. But it's complicated. Here is the single best site I've found for sorting it out. Click on individual states in the map to get the details of that state.

That'd be me. "No brag, just fact" to quote Walter Brennan. I was not complaining about the high cost of getting a CCW, or about the long hours of classroom, just highlighting. I was complaining about the indoor range, in particular the swinging target "feature".

As for bragging, all I said was "I could hit the broad side of a barn" which I suppose could be received as bragging, although I'm not sure how. The target itself speaks for itself, I don't know if it's a joke or decent under the circumstances, even if the County considers it a perfect score for CCW qualification.

A ccw permit allows us to buy guns with no nics check. There are benefits to having it.

I can see why some states reciprocate and others do not. Some states you have to jump through you ass to get a CCW, others mail it to you home after paying the fees.

A established set of standards for the training that would allow reciprocity would be nice.

Lets say the firearm was stolen from you and recovered at the scene of a crime. It is traced to the original purchaser whom you bought it from. Now, is that person going to perjure themselves and claim it was stolen from him to protect you or is he going to say I sold it to XYZ before the law went into effect before he remembers he originally bought it after the law went into effect?

If more than one person is involved in any transaction there is a 50% chance at minimum that more people will know about it. Roll the dice anyway you are comfortable with and live with the consequences.
