As a lifelong resident of California I am embarrassed they had to write this.
Sorry Larry.

Dear CHRIS,
You are being alerted to upcoming changes which will affect the terms of service on your MidwayUSA account.

On November 8, 2016, the State of California passed Proposition 63, also known as the Safety For All Act. This wide sweeping legislation resulted in several changes to California laws regarding guns and ammunition.

While the Safety for All Act changes many things, most importantly to you as a MidwayUSA Customer, it makes the sale of ammunition via the internet, to any individual who does not possess an FFL or other legally documented exception to the law, illegal as of January 1, 2018.

All California ammunition transactions, to private individuals, without legal exceptions, occurring on or after January 1, 2018 must happen face to face. Therefore, on December 24th, 2017 MidwayUSA will no longer be able to ship ammunition to you without a valid FFL license in California. The December 24th date allows enough time for delivery of ammunition, from our shipping facility, to our California Customers before the law takes effect.

While there are other documented exceptions to this law, MidwayUSA is currently unable to manage exceptions beyond a valid FFL. If you are an FFL holder, please check to make sure we have your valid FFL on file at MidwayUSA to prevent any delays in your shipment.

If we can be of assistance with your ammunition purchases between now and December 25, 2017, we would be honored serve you.

Sincerely,
MidwayUSA

Start a movement in CA to get every california firearm owner to apply for an FFL

Components haven't been specifically targeted but they haven't said they are OK either....probably will come down to who interprets it. Still a lot of gray area as with any nonsense law.

Section 16150 (a) "ammunition" means one or more loaded cartridges. "ammunition" does not include blanks.

This is California, I'm sure they don't realize that people can make their own ammunition with components and they will interpret/amend it as they seem fit.....to keep us all safe.

The legislators and most voters in California also voted for and passed a Marijuana Initiative not long ago Part of that had to do with a testing phase of Marijuana which most legislators (and many voters) took advantage of by personally buying and using the stuff. Certainly Sacramento and those in the Capitol Building have shown us residents that their brain (no matter how small) got fried. A shining example and proof is shown daily in public when we hear Nancy Pelosi speak.

But as to Midway USA's notification to CA residents, yeah we get it and hear you. But I rarely buy anything anymore from Midway anyway and this'll seal the deal for my abstinence from any further transactions with them. Besides, a drive to AZ isn't all that bad should I need factory ammo (in large quantity), not to mention the imminent challenge to this "law" before the US Supreme Court. Don't know where this will end, but being "resourceful" always helps to make sure one is not left unprepared should the need arise. And as others have already pointed out, my handloads are generally far better in terms of accuracy and that has little to do with what Midway USA or Larry Potterfield wants to sell me or not. Lastly, of course, face to face sales of ammunition will certainly lower the crime rate and improve public safety, just like "a joint a day keeps the doctor away".....oh yeah!

CA figures if they can get a license fee for FFL.....all the more to their better!!

And then...the already current FFL owners of any gun shops doing retail....could very well have hit their Reps up to get this passed!!

?????????????

At some point I believe gun guys will need to live west of the Appalachians and east of the Rockies. As it stands now, both coasts are waging a war of attrition and death by a thousand cuts against gun owners.

Isn't there a Bill Clinton era law that says FFL's must have a brick and mortar presence? I used to have a kitchen table FFL myself but it's been 30 years.
Many people have the kit table FFLs now. Im not sure of the exact rules but i know you can get one to operate out of the house.

Jeeez!

Californian shooters I truly feel for you :(

I live in Australia and can see a stitch up of law abiding shooters when I see one. you (doubtless you already know) are on a very slippery slope to what we currently deal with here. The signs are clear and unambiguous.

I would post a link to Australian state laws on firearms but don't want to be pinged by the mods for posting offensive and objectionable content!

Aw come on Alex. I know youre a great guy. Midways response seems very reasonable in this. They cant be expected to do an in depth study interpreting CA law every time they sell a couple boxes of ammo. And they have given CA customers 9 months notice. I didnt buy from Midway for a long time, but they are better recently and I check there now when comparison shopping. FWIW I seldom shoot factory loads.
