Me and my “ aught 6”

My dad moved us to Alaska in 1963 so he could hunt. I went with him starting at age 10. He took a 06 Springfield and cut it down to fit me. No recoil pad so it kicked some. At age 12 I got tangled up with a brownie so he got me a model 600 350 mag. Now that thing kicked the snot out of you and still does to this day. Later on he built both of us Whelens. Over the years they have killed a bunch of bears, moose and caribous. No longer have an 06 but will always have a Whelen. Last 30 years of his life dad owned a gun shop so I could have hunted with anything I wanted but the FN Mauser in 35 Whelen has been on every hunt but one.

Had that book on my Christmas list as a kid, back when Cabela's print catalog showed various hunting books. Never did get it, no idea of it's still in print
It's being sold at the very link you posted, along with all his other books. I notice he's an M.D..

Hey Joe, That 100 in .284 is kinda a rare bird. Ive got one in .284 pre 64 and a 88 pre 64. Used to shoot that 100 but decided I dont want to screw up an old classic. So it dont get oughta the safe anymore. The clips are too short but they are from another time. Doug
Yup, it certainly is. Sorry I ever sold it . All mine were pre 64 . Or very close to it . The .243 - 88 was kinda rare too !

and I too, have an FN Mauser in a .270. What a fine piece . I put a Timney on it which I enjoyed . I still have a one piece FN scope Mount I have no use for ....( if someone else does)

My 30-06 is a Winnie Model 54. I bought it used from the Gun Library maybe 10 years ago. It's big, heavy and shoots pretty good. I like it because whoever had it was a shooter and a hunter, as they D&T'ed it for two different scope mounts at some point in it's life, and it's currently wearing a receiver site. Also has a classic style red recoil pad. I scoped the barrel and it looks pretty darn good for a rifle almost a 100 years old. I will take some photos this weekend and post them up. When I use it, I feel like I am carrying a lot of history around with me.

I own a stainless 700 BDL in 30-06 mid 90's production. I did put a HS Precision stock on it. Traded a buddy for it after I got out of the Marine Corps in 98. I hunt in Texas and have shot coyotes, bobcats, deer, and LOTS of hogs with that rifle. For quite a few years that's the only rifle I had or could afford to have. Now fortunately, I have more rifles than I need. I am a fan of standard long action calibers. My favorite "deer" caliber is 270 Win. If I'm going just hog hunting the '06 is what I take. I have had good luck thumping big boars with it. And have had good luck with a Barnes 150 TTSX topped of with stiff load IMR 4350. That seems to be a good deer/hog load. I have said it on here before. If your hunting in North America, all you truly need is a 30-06, 22 LR, and a 12 gauge and your covered. If I could only have one caliber to hunt North America with it would be an '06.

My Sauer 200 with 22in fluted. Love this rifle and shoots 1/4in 5 shot with my 168amax. I dont hunt brown bears or try to wound elk at 800 yds so the '06 is perfect for me. The only 'better' would be a short action 308. Either way though, you can shoot the heck out either one and not think about burning out your barrel. 2-3x the life of a 270 280 25-06 etc.IMG_3272.jpeg
