Me and my “ aught 6”

Bottom Fodder

Silver $$ Contributor
What happen to the 30-06 back In the 60’s and 70’s it was king of deer rifles in my neck of the woods.
people laughed at me when I bought a 308 for my hunting rifle. I had a hunting buddy at the time that use a “aught 6 and all I hear from him was “ me and my aught 6”. I can’t even remember the last 30-06 I saw someone hunting with much less at a match, next king of the was the 270 nope seen anyone are shooting with that one as well. lot of new king of the hill have come and gone but the 308 is still everywhere. I know the 308 replace the aught 6 with the military and then came the 223 (5.56) but I still see them being shot but nowhere to be found is the aught 6!
just rambling
what king the hill do you remember that is no longer “A thing”

My 1st deer rifle was a Remington 700 BDL 30-06. Dad got a bug up his a** and had all 4 Remington's rebarreled in 25-06. Still have that rifle & 1 other of his I inherited when he left us to hunt the big bucks behind the pearly gates & still have one of the original 30-06 barrels.

Since going on my own buying sprees off & on over the years, I mostly hunt with my 308, Encore 25-06 or Browning Eclipse 270WSM.

Kinda funny, spent my 1st 30 years hunting with only the 30-06 & the next 20 years using every caliber but.....

30-06, 270, 30-30, 7mm rem mag still kills the deer around here. Ive known one guy around here that used a 308 and that was when i was a kid. It was a model 100 winchester
Yep my brother in law had a model 100 308, that gun me hook on 308 and the 30-30 was most kids first “deer rifle”
im not bad mouthing the 30-06 I just don‘t hear people talk about like they did

I remember those days, the 270 vs 30-06 articles in every gun magazine. My first deer rifle was a 30-06, a few 30-30s, killed elk with a 7 mag but never owned a 270 sorry Jack O'Conner.
Now, got rid of the 7 mag and 30-06, 25-06 etc.
And have a bunch of.... 308's.
When we were 15 I remember my hunting buddy who was the same age, saying "do you think a 30-06 and 30-30 will kill a black bear." We were deer hunting, but got into black bear in heavy brush in the rain, bear crap, and fresh tracks all over. You could smell em...and their tracks over ours on the way out, as we decided to get out of there 15 feet was a long shot. Went to the 338 and 350 mag and heavy bullets for my hunting needs...and the 416 Rigby...(Elmer Keith? LOL) But the 30-06 will do the job on most anything ya want to hunt, especially new bullets and powder available...if ya can find them.

I just loaded some 125 grain pro-hunters for mine leaving at 3100 FPS. Let’s see the 6.5 Creedmoor boys top that!

Well, your load is a bit anemic according to the data I've seen. Loaded to it's potential 3000 fps with 125 grain bullets, the 6.5 Creedmoor would have 200 ft-lbs more energy at 200 yards than your load.

You may be right, but I didn’t see near the energy out of the Creedmoor at muzzle velocities.

Grew up shooting a 700 classic in 270, my whole family carried 270s and frowned at anybody packing a 30-06 or a 308. Then a guy bought a 25-06 to camp and he shot a mid sized Muley on the Kaibab, the front shoulders were destroy with a single shot, that left an impression. The following year a couple more 25-06s were in camp. The latest great cartridges are fun but so are the classics. I bought a 06 later in life in Ruger #1, absolutely love that rifle and I wish I still had my 700 classic too.

You just failed to get the memo
All of the major arms manufacturers and ammunition suppliers declared that any cartridge developed before 1990 was obsolete.
Prong Horn Antelope are immune to any bullet fired from a 25/06.
Elk will laugh at any shooter armed with a 30/06
Whiten Tails don’t even bother to flee at the sight of a 30/30 or pray tell, a 35 Remington.
The 270 Winchester? If you are going to hunt with that, you might as well start driving a Model T Ford.

It makes no difference that the antiquated “aught six” can push a 180 grn 30 caliber bullet 2900 fps. Today’s shooters simply cannot stand the humiliation of showing up at the range with a cartridge that has “Springfield” on the head stamp.

My 1st center-fire was a Rem 721 in 06. I don't use it as much now because of the weight (it's a heavy pig) but it still shoots great. 270 Win. I have a mdl. 70 that is THE most accurate bone stock factory rifle I own. I've had that out West several times.

I shot my first 30-06 today ever in central Idaho.
A neighbor has a US 1903 "sporter" Marked A3, and the rest of the markings were under the scope bases.
4X Ted Weaver scope.
We checked zero and it shot fine.
My shoulder hurts.
aught six.

My first rifle was a Ruger Mark II in 30-06 that I bought at GiJoes sporting goods along with some green and yellow boxed Remington Corelokt ammo 165gr & 180 purchased last century...

One of my hunting buddies who has since left the range rest his soul, would hunt for elk by finding a game trail, hunker down and have his Remington 700 ADL 30-06 with 180gr core lokts across his lap. While I saw more game, He filled more tags than I ever did with that 30-06.

Our gun club had a swap meet a few years ago and I decided to let go of the Ruger. Sold the rifle to a club member who filled his first deer tag with it. He was so proud he sent me a pic. Made me proud actually.

Way back in the days of yor,1915, the venerable 250-3000 Savage was the first cartridge to hit that magical 3000 ft./s mark. I imagine it was king of the hill for a while. I know it kind of has a cult following and is still being used out there. There have been all sorts of other whiz bang cartridges that have come out since then and a lot of them have faded away but the old Savage still puts meat on my table most every year. I do use other cartridges from time to time thinking I need to reinvent the wheel but the Savage is my go to rifle and cartridge and my favorite.78655D51-79D8-4250-B17E-B9D2D6C95B3E.jpeg
