Scope/Rifle issues - Need some help

I have Winchester 94 lever action 30-30 with a top mounted Tasco 3-9x40 scope. I am sighting it in for deer hunting and was shooting at the 2 distances that I think I might get the best shots. I sighted it in at 150 yards which is hill to hill and is a flat shot. I got it to shoot 3 inch group at that distance. No problems right. I bring the target in to 100 yards, which is now a down hill shot with probably a 20 foot drop. The rifle now starts shooting 6 inches to the left. I am using the same rest, rounds, and technique. The only difference is the up and down angle that I am looking at the target thru the scope. I have done this twice now, thinking maybe my scope moved, and it was accurate at 150 again and then back to 6 inches to the left at 100. Anyone ever heard of this?

Are you adjusting the scope to get back to 100 yards ?
If you are, it sounds like your scope is canted..
Or ???

Is your scope mounted top as over the top and center of the receiver? Or, above the receiver and off-set mounted on the left side? And, how high above the receiver is the centerline of your scope?

Best Regards......Eagle Six

Could there also be a bit of wind coming through to throw you off? Is your trigger control good? Do you have another scope to try?

With a Winchester it's unlikely that it's mounted up top. It should be off to the side and that would account for some of your side to side variation at different distances. If I were you and you're able I'd use open sights for the 100 yards shots.

Top mounts can and are used on the angle ejects without a problem, if every thing is straight and true..
Side mounts are a whole new ball game..

They make angle eject 94s? All I've ever seen are ejected over your shoulder. If so I guess we learn something new every day. Of course mine was made in 49.

Yeah, mine is an angle eject. I actually have one of each, but shoot open sights with the top eject. I dont change anything at all when I move into 100 yards, not even the magnification. The only thing that I could think of is that the lens on the scope is off and because I am looking at a diiferent angle when I shoot at 100 yards, it is moving the image. Dont know, maybe I just suck at this LOL. I used to shoot golf balls at 100 yards with my dad as a kid with his .308 sniper rifle, but never got too much in actually setting the gun up. Just a little baffled by this.

Could be parallax......try shooting a group with your eye further back from the eyepiece, and center the clear image in the outer black circle that appears (called vignetting).

Something goofy is going on. The scope, the mount, the rings. Canting isn't going to move the POI 6" to the left at 100 yards.

Could you try shooting that downhill shot with iron sights and see what happens? It'll either clear it up or it won't.

If it does clear it up, you've isolated the problem to the scope/mount/rings. Then, I'd start looking for something loose.

If it is still shifting to the left, you know it's in the rifle/shooter system. Then, the first thing that I'd try is to shoot the same shot with your other M94. If the POI is back on target, you know it's the rifle. If it's still shifted left, it's something that you're doing.

FWIW,

Just a followup:

I don't think it can be missing a wind condition. 10 mph at 100 yards with a 170 gr 30-30 at 2200 fps is 1.8". 6" would be 33 mph. I don't think he'd miss that wind coming down that hollow.

I don't think it can be cant. If the rifle is sighted in at 150, it's 1.8" high at 100. So, if you canted it 90 degrees to the left, you'd still only be 1.8" to the left.

This is just back of the napkin, so take it FWIW.
