Me and my “ aught 6”

You are right my first centerfire rifle was a 742 rem 30-06. I sold it to buy a 25-06 Ruger to hunt lopes with in 1989. i thought it had to go because i want a repeater not the single shot Remington.

I'm old. Shot way too many cartridges in a borrowed 30 06 A3 Springfield as a youth target shooting. Shot my first deer w a 1970's version of a model 1894 Winchester lever gun. The quality of the rifle was just average The cartridge was fine for N E hunting . I really did biz w another so so example of a production rifle a Ruger 1970's vintage 257 Roberts bolt gun. A model 77 ? Anywaty over the years I've used many rifles/cartidges. Most of my rifles today are single shot target guns. For hunting I reach for a Marlin 336 35Rem lever gun or my wife's super lite Huskvarne 30-06. I have a few other "Deer"rifles but they are not my first choice . mike in ct

I will most likely always have at least one good 30-06 rifle. It's arguably the most versatile cartridge ever made. Not a thing wrong with it. There are bigger, there are faster. There are also smaller and slower...but it's just a cartridge that will do just about anything you could want in North America, including being competitive in long range. Just look at German Salazar. That proves it as a viable cartridge in a very demanding discipline.

The 88 best I remember was a lever action, Remington made the 760 that was a pump
And I have had 2 - 760’s , ‘06 & probably the worlds 1st ( by Oberneyer) in a Whelen back in the early 60’s, and 4- 88’s . 2 in .284, 1 in a .243, and a 100 in .284 . Wish I still had them all , but am married to a woman that didn’t know ...... or care about getting involved .... If I am given the chance to come back this way again, there will be dramatic changes .

30-06 used to be my wife's deer rifle. 165 Corelokts. She had no problem anchoring a deer at 200 yards. Remington 700 with a Harrell's radial brake.
My wife is soft. She shoots her deer with a .223 and the only way anyone will ever get that rifle from her is to pry it from her cold, dead fingers :D

True story, first year she owned it she shot one horn off of a spike. I asked where she was aiming? She replied "right between the eyes". I had to inform her that her pencil barreled Ruger Hawkeye compact didn't shoot as well as her custom target rifle.
