machinist formula question on moving a shoulder forward, rem 700, indexing the receiver

Hello
I need to move the shoulder forward on a rem 700, new barrel chambering, indexing the barrel to point up at the muzzle to match the top of the receiver..
I had seen a formula somewhere and cant remember. maybe starts with 1.0 divided by 16tpi =.0625 cut from the shoulder = 1 complete revolution of the receiver?
thx for the help!

Yep, AND if you use a digital angle gauge/protractor to determine how many degrees you need to line up the barrel and the action, you can take that and calculate pretty close to exactly how much to cut off the shoulder.

So for example: if the thread pitch is 16 = 0.0625/revolution and you are say, 42 degrees off of lining up, you take 0.0625/360 (degrees per rotation) x 42 degrees (needed) and you come up with ~0.0073 needed to remove from the shoulder.

It works slick.

Hope this is useful to you,

Frank

Hi thx for the help!
Can you go into more detail on using the protractor? I have a manual one with a magnetic base , maybe put onto the scope base to get a degree reading? I need to go 3/4 of a turn or so inward.
And also do you stop short on the indexing to allow for any crush from torquing the receiver?
Thx again!!

You can use your protractor as you describe. You will need to stop short of TDC to allow for the threads to pull up. There are factors that will affect how much crush you will get. You might consider leaving it a bit proud and creeping up on it until you get a feel for it
