I found a deal on an old rem 700, need advise.

Lee, I built a friend a 22-250AI on a M700 a couple of years ago. I believe he's got it in a McMillan A5 stock (not sure anymore, because he likes to swap stocks around, even though I've bedded them!?). I used a 1:9tw. Bartlein, and he's shot it mostly with Hornady 75&80gr. AMaxes. Believe me, these bullets will do a job on coyotes out at 400yds....even with fireforming loads.

You can buy a Howa 1500 in 22-250 0r 243 for about 350$ plus tax They are fine guns.Mine in 22-250 will shoot 1/2 inch at 200 yards with 55gr Nosler BT.

I shoot the 222 quite a bit. Since March I have put 703 rounds down range. Here are a few loads:

30 gr FBHP Berger 3,850 fps. Five Shots @ 100 yds 0.50" Typ. @300 yards 1.4" Typ
45 gr VMax Hornady 3,725 fps @100 1.0"
52 gr AMax Hornady 3,150 fps @100 0.47"
52 gr FBHP Berger 3,225 fps @100 0.18" typical small group was 0.08"

The 30 gr tips are explosive out to past 200 yards. Generally with any of the 50 to 53 gr bullets the rifle will shoot under 1/2". This rifle uses a sleeved XP-100 action and a Leupold 6.5X20X50 30 MM tube scope. Barrel is a 1-14 Montana Rifle barrel 25.5" long hand lapped with a taper to the muzzle end.

I have used it in both score and group matches at the local range. It keeps up with most of the 6 mm PPC match rifles on the 100 yard target line.

It is loads of fun to shoot and makes you pay attention to the wind. Cost to shoot is low. The barrel on a 222 last forever. My buddy has 20,000+ rounds down his and it still shoots. (He has cut it back two times). Only takes 21 grs of powder and 22 bullets are a little cheaper than the 6 mm.

If you want fun the 222 is where it is at. It you need more kill power at longer ranges look at the 6 BR or the Dasher with 1-8 or so twist barrels. Both are better that the 243 in most cases.

The 223 is a 222 Mag. It is OK but no class.

Octopus, what are you using for powder in the 52gr Berger load? I ask because I too have a .222 and I would like to see if I can maybe gain a little by using your data.

That's some good grouping from a .222. I can only get about .25" or a little better @100yds, but I am far from a real BR shooter.

I am still up in the air as to what i should do for a coyote rifle this year. I sold the action i had to fund another with a 308 bolt so i still have the option to build on a rem 700. However i am looking at these little CZ 527 varmint rifles. I handled one the other day and it felt real good. I wish i could get one of the walnut stocked cz 527 in a 22-250. If i go this route it will have to be a 223. But like i said just not real sure what i will end up doing. thanks lee

I picked up a CZ 527 varmint kevlar in a trade and I really like it. Sucker shoots too. I tinkered with the set trigger and now it is set scary low when in set mode. In normal mode, it is not the greatest trigger.

The only bad thing about these rifles is that the ring options suck. I picked up a spare pair of Leupolds to go with the factory CZs. Have been flopping back and forth from a T-36 for target, and a Mark 2 6-18 for hunting.

Try one out.......

I have a .222 win model 70xtr and have had it for about 40 years. It has shot a lot of chucks over the years. I estimate around 6500-7000 rounds down the tube. Accuracy has opened up to about 1.1" from new at about .4" for 5 shot groups. I loved this rifle used it a lot but I'm going .223 ack for the next chambering.(new brux 1-9)
I could hit chucks way out with that .222 but most chucks shot 300yds + seemed to make it back to their hole. I think the .222 looses too much Velocity to get reliable expansion at 300+ yards. I pretty much always used 52-53 gr sierra bullets. Maybe a diffrent bullet would work better at the longer ranges?

Lee,
I own most of the rifles mentioned and they all will work for coyotes out to the ranges you mentioned. I have a custom sako remakee .222 that has taken lots of dogs @ 300+ yards and one of the most accurate cartridges out there! they ruled the bench rest world for 40 years as you already know,accurate-low recoil cheap to shoot and very fun to shoot! I have a 22-250AI that awesome out to 600yds. But the rifle I have killed more one shot red mist tail up in the air ringing doesn't get up three minutes later and run off rifle is the old tried and true .243win w/65 gr v-max 41gr IMR 3031(to hot for most rifles works great in mine)its a barrel burner @ over 3900fps but its been a ball, when its done and it almost is I will rebarrel it the same.good luck with whatever you build and enjoy!
Wayne.
