Lyman Borescope

For all of us, Jet, Twoboxer, Joe and others who bought, I hope we are generally satisfied with the purchase.

This maybe a good tool for our Shooting school this June, If I have pictures of a carbon Ring before and after this may help a lot of guys understand what you are looking for and how to get rid of it.

I guess I was too late.

Shortly after 8:00 this morning I went to the Gunstop website and started to place an order for the Lyman Borescope. In the meantime, I looked for a discount coupon found one, and received an email (No.1) from Gunstop with the code for free shipping - good until Jan 31. I created an account and placed my order - albeit no discount was reflected; but that's OK, I thought, they'll take care of that later. A minute later, I received another email (No.2) from Gunstop thanking me for joining their email list (?).

Three minutes later, I received another email (No.3) confirming my order. Immediately after that, another email (No.4) thanking me for registering at Gunstop. Immediately after that, another email (No.5) with a transaction receipt for my order. Six minutes later, another email (No.6) to let me know that my order was Awaiting Shipment.

But then, three minutes later, another email (No.7) to let me know that they were out of the borescope, my transaction had been voided, and that back order was not available.

Everything was going too well, I guess - until email No.7.

Oh Well,

Así es la vida . . .

Hope so to. I have access to Hawkeye's at work so am interesting in comparing them.

Whenever I get my hands on one I plan on comparing it to a hawkeye as well. I have been using my gunsmiths hawkeye whenever I want to check something, but I really need my own tool. I've never been comfortable borrowing other people's tools. I'm sure that a camera/monitor bore scope couldn't possibly give you the exact clarity of a direct mirror view like the hawkeye, but as long as it provides adequate detail, I will be more than satisfied. Really like the idea of not having to keep my eye on the scope like a hawkeye. I think that will be the biggest advantage providing the picture is clear. Though when looking at the bore pictures folks have posted on here using the Lyman, I've been pretty impressed and don't expect any disappointment. Especially for the price paid. Can't wait. Hopefully find one soon. Fingers crossed.

Grice Gun Shop in Clearfield, PA had them for $219.95 as of last week. I do not know their current inventory status.

Was reading more reviews on the Lyman borecam and one fella mentioned that the scope rod has ruler type measurements printed on it so that if you identify a problem area in your bore, you'll know right where it is.

With a Hawkeye you could easily mark the rod, then measure it with a tape to come to the same conclusion, but I thought that was a nice touch of convenience on Lyman's part :)

I got mine the other day. For the price, I love it.

I looked at the bore of a .308 which I'd cleaned (thoroughly, I thought) last week. After a good deal of scrubbing, it's finally clean enough.

It looks like Remington packed a handful of sand into the chamber for the final pass of the reamer. It's nice to have a borescope, but you may not always like what you see,

I got one just before Thanksgiving. Great unit but I have one gripe. My cleaning session took a lot longer than it used to after I got a look at what I was leaving behind. I spent a whole day cleaning two rifles and shudder at the thought of what I'll find when I tackle the rest of those in the safe.

Here's a tip: Get an SD card for each rifle. That will give you a graphic record for each and if you forget to take the card out and label each pic using your computer, you'll still have them in chronological order. The cards are cheap.

Other than revealing every particle of carbon, scratch, or lint, I love mine.

You can use this feature to label each pic, Just write down the measurement in sequence, remove the SD card, insert it in your laptop or computer card slot, and use the "rename file" feature to show the distance into the bore. Sure beats having to use a camera adapter on a Hawkeye.

Got back from the gun club and there was a package on the front porch from Gunstop. I feel like Ralphie on Christmas morning.:D

Same here :) Shipping cost was pretty steep, but the turnaround time was GREAT lol. Just got back from putting the first 5 shots down a new Krieger barrel too.

mine came today. well. now I know where the carbon ring is. I put it through my Lucas bore guide. the bushing for my cleaning rod was the perfect size.

Played with mine just now. Wonderful resolution and convenient to use.

Two mint Dashers, each with a trace of copper in front of the throat for just an inch or so. No carbon ring. Easy to see the difference between conventional rifling and 5R. Perfect and crisp look at crowns also.

Neat!

Got mine for Christmas. Funny how they're never in stock when discounted before Christmas. :(
Since the Gunstop is local to me, I watched it on their web page for a long time to see if they ever got them actually in stock, but gave up after months on end.
It sure gives credence to "TMI". My confidence in my 40Xb dropped significantly once I "looked behind the curtain".
Wish there was a way to plug the camera cable directly into a USB port on my laptop for possibly better color rendering in real time.

Got mine a couple of days ago, so far so good!

But WRT the Hawkeye: Yes, this Lyman is more convenient for digital captures. However, once the electronics fail (and they will) we're left with a very short fishing rod. The simple optical Hawkeye should last forever, or for the rest of my life, whichever comes first. I simply can't justify 7x the price for a 22" Hawkeye (or 3x for a 17" one.)
