LOOKING FOR THE BEST GUNSMITH

I've had SR bench rifles built by Sid Goodling, (my main GS), Dwight Scott, Bob Brackney, Larry Feusse & Jim Borden. All really good gunsmiths. Take your pick because there are a ton of other gunsmiths out there who do excellent work and they are all busy so expect to be waiting for a while. All the top gunsmith's are backed up with work. Another real good gunsmith is Dave Short from western PA. He is worth calling.

A bunch of great BR smiths have been listed, but! I think some folks have different ideas of what a great gunsmith happens to be.

The gentleman building my rifles is among the best in the business. Precision and perfection is his game.

I have a 6BR that was built by Doyle Anglin out side of ATL. GA it shoots lights out if u are interested PH.706-654-8400 beak

Real gunsmiths, at least in our country, are few and far between. Most, specialize in one discipline or another.

If you are talking about fitting a barrel it can be done by a 12 year old!Stock work is another skill set.Taking a rail spike and milling it and harden it to make a part for a 1911 is another rabbit hole.As JRS and I have said before the work of Europeans are unmatched. An apprentice can take a lifetime just to be terrible. My question is what is your criteria ?

I take it that you are not current on the present gunsmiths in the US of A. Do a search on Duane Wiebe, James Anderson, Joe Seeley, and a few others. They and a couple others will not take the back seat to any European craftsmen.

One of my James Anderson rifles-416 Rigby on a 1917 Enfield with extended tangs.
Check out the custom scope bases and the one off bolt release. So many things on this rifle that most don't see.

Check out Joe Seeley's work. He is not only a metal worker, stockmaker, but an engraver also.

These guys have been taking a 1.5" barrel blank and on conventional lathes and mills produce a #4 sporter barrel with integral front sight, band for a sling, and the quarter rib. Duane Wiebe's little Kurz size receiver was made by cutting and putting together a couple screwed up receivers.
Sure not taking anything from the accuracy smiths as some are very talented.

That is some great work. Thanks for dropping those names, Butch. I had never heard of any of them before. Certainly will be paying attention to their work from now on.

Beautiful, Butch thanks for setting things straight.

Don Dunlap

No, Butch. That was made by one of the master gunsmiths in the Ferlach for a friend (Pastor Frederick Smith) in Berlin Germany. The engraving alone took more than one year to complete.

Knew that it was German by the style of engraving.

This is a shotgun that came with rifle barrels also. You can see the adjustable peep sight folded forward. It is German and built by IW. Meffert in about 1886. By changing barrels you would have a shotgun or rifle. Been in my safe for many years.
Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters and game wardens as well as mathmaticians is in the engraving that you are looking at. The 2 little pins are firing pin indicators.
