Okay guys your help will be greatly appreciated! Attached are my results of my testing using Varget and 4064 with 175 SMK’s. I also included a test of AMAX 155’s. Rifle is a factory Rem 700 XCR with 26” barrel.
The 175 SMK’s:
NEW unfired Lapua Brass
.5 grain increments
BR2 primers
COAL = 2.8”
My interpretation:
VARGET:
I see the node being at 42-43 grains. Scatter node at 43.5. MV range 2530-2600. The other node at 44 to 45 grains. MV at this higher node is 2660-2725 respectively. I am a bit biased to the higher node or group because on my first load development I found 44.7 grains to be best. But this was in Winchester brass.
4064:
I see the node at 42.5 to 43.5 grains. MV here 2650-? (I had errors on my chrono this day so MV unreliable for 4064 testing)
*** I saw or see no pressure signs at these higher loads. I was thinking about shooting .5 grains above my tested loads and see what happens. Let me know if you agree or not.***
155 AMAX’s:
Fire-formed Winchester brass
.5 grain increments
CCI LR primers
COAL= 2.810”
Varget:
I believe I have 2 nodes 1st being at 43.5 to 44.5 grains. 2nd being 46-47. I obviously like the MV at the higher node but point of impact is below point of aim.

***So what do you guys now suggest? I thought maybe I have something to work with but then sometimes feel like I don’t. your help is greatly appreciated.

These loads are for fun at 1000 and beyond if the chance presents itself.

The first one is 6.5x55 sauer. Lapua brass, CCi BR2 primers and the powder is VV560.

Nr 1 was 48.2
Nr 2 was 48.5
Nr 3 was 48.8
Nr.4 was 49.1
NR.5 was 49.4

Second rifle

Remington Sendero 300 win mag. Norma brass, CCi 250 magnum and the powder is VV570

Nr 1 was 80
Nr 2 was 80.5
Nr 3 was 81
Nr.4 was 81.5
NR.5 was 82

Can I use this with a Stag Arms 6L 1:8 twist AR?

I single load now just because I got used to it from a bit of highpower shooting.

I have:

Sierra Book
Sierra 55 60 and 77 Gr bullets
Varget and CFE223 powder
Federal and CCI primers
My own LC brass trimmed to 1.760

Powder is scarce and I don't want to stupidly waste a precious resource

Friday may be a good day for me so if I can get this resolved I can make them up in the morning.

I'm fairly sure I could move the 77 gr to 0.020 from the lands, maybe even the 60, I'm not sure about the 55's though and I can't get to my bench tonight.

What about the 0.5gr increase in charge?

77 gr... 22.6 - 23.9 gr?? would I use 22.6, 23.0, 23.5 and 23.9 ?
60 gr... 24.3 - 27.1 gr?? would I use 24.5, 25.0, 25.5, 26.0, 26.5, 27.0 ?
55 gr... 25.1 - 27.2 gr?? would i use 25.1, 25.5, 26.0, 26.5, 27.0 ?

Do I use the COAL per the book or do I try to teach for 0.020 from lands?

Use .3 increments with your setup. If you can't reach the lands load as long as you can and test. After testing powder charge seat bullet into case in .003" increments to do final tuning.

Thank you, I ended up with 5 groups of 3 rounds. 24.5 - 26.5 by 0.5Gr increments

100 yards from bench with bipod and rear bag.

24.5 wasn't it so I discarded target. These are the remainig 4 targets

Sierra 60 gr w/ Varget in LC brass trimmed to 1.760 and bullet seated at 2.260

Which do you think?

Did you hit pressure at 26.5 gr?

I would load 26.3 and test seating depth, but would like to see what I would do past 26.5 if no pressure signs was encountered.

Sir,

I don't know how to read cases. I did and still have the cases seperated by load. I'm hoping to run into someone that can read them for me this Sunday but really I need to learn this for my own safety.

I didn't even try going to 27.0 because the Varget powder really seemed to fill the case and being new thought I'll stop at 26.5.

As far as 0.003 increments is concerned, I've had no success at all trying to get anything remotely consistent when I try measuring the seating depth. The reason I chose 2.260 is because thats the max for magazine feeding. I do have a bullet comparator and a micrometer bullet seating die so if I could get a cocnsistent # I'm confident I could build the round.

What I meant is to test seating depth by seating your bullets .003" deeper after every group. For example, shoot a group at 2.260", then another at 2.257", 2.254", 2.251", and so on. Shoot about 10 groups and you will see groups get smaller at some point before they get big again.

A couple of the things you say you don’t know how to do are very important skills for successful and safe reloading.

Reading cases would be looking for pressure signs - things like flatten primers, “cratering” primer hits, ejector marks on the head, hard bolt lifts (if it is a bolt gun), primer leaks, and blown primers. Do some research on the web to see how these looks like – it’s not hard but will keep you safe. You cannot safely shoot increasing loads without being able to read the pressure signs, as normally we read each one before going higher. So getting someone to read them later is not the way to go.

Not being able to get a consistent seating depth is going to be a problem you need to learn how to fix before you can successfully reload for precision shooting because as you can see, seating depths affect accuracy/precision. There could be a lot of things that affect this including problems with the seating die, how fast you seat the bullets, neck tension inconsistencies, a compress load, etc. My suggestion to you would be to learn to seat consistently before you try to do this type of tuning as you are literally “putting the cart before the horse” and so in for a lot of frustrations.
