Lets see those hunting rifles

A couple truck / hunting guns.

Old Savage gunshow budget, put together gun. Barrel came from a different one, .22-250. It was windy and variable that day, my object wasn't to test wind-reading ability, but just to get an idea of how the gun would shot. Thus 75yd groups. Shoots ok. Groups tightened right up at 37.5gr. and good velocity. That same load did well another day at 100 with no wind. Scope Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15.

Had this old walnut 788 since the early 80's. Shot out the original .222 barrel, this one came from a 700 - 20" long, very minimum .223 chamber, 0 freebore.
Load is 27.5/VV133/7-1/2/40Vmax @ 3895. IMI brass. Burris FFII 4.5-14.

I was mostly shooting the 75 gr Vmax but the 70 gr blitz king also shoots as good or better. The older 80 grain Sierra Blitz also.

I was just thinking about building another one. My first one shoots 105 Hybrids and they worked well in an 8 twist at 3350fps.
I was thinking about a 9 or 10 twist with 80gr Barnes ttsx. Might be able to get 3400+ with 26" barrel.

221 Fireball

This is the newest and prettiest 221. Haven't shot it yet. Sako small action, Hart barrel now 23-1/2", .250"NK, 0 freebore. These don't need a brake but it was already on the barrel which had been chambered for a larger case and was several inches longer. Bushnell Scopechief 6-20 from years ago, it's a pretty good scope. You remember back years ago and all those video clips were on Youtube of "sniper in Afghanistan, shooting taliban" with a .50 cal in rocky terrain? And the supposed "taliban"were blown to pieces and flying through the air. These were posted by several different people and got a lot of response. Dozens of responders claimed it was them or so and so shooting, or filming, or this/that (mountain goats, etc) was really being shot. Well those were actually clips taken from one of DAA's Varmint Safari videos, shooting rockchucks in remote Northern Nevada. Gun was a Sako action 6AI and 75gr VMax. doing high 3000's, upwards of 4,000. He told me the range was 300 or less, or 200 or less, I don't remember exactly. Those 'chucks were flown to smithereens. That cartridge shooting a fairly light varmint bullet fast is real impressive.

Early Rem. 40X, now 22BR. Bought in '88 used, was a 22-250 had it rechambered to 22BR. Factory barrel now 26" long, 2oz trigger. Back then you started with Rem.7BR brass and it had to be necked down and turned to whatever neck dia. the riflebuilder's reamer was. He was also a benchrest shooter and his reamer had a .243"neck. He turned 800 cases for me with his lathe setup. This barrel is so stinking accurate i'm not wanting to wear it out. Working up loads it has shot consecutive groups below .1"wth 50gr. Blitzkings......aim at a 200yd rabbit's eye and hit it, or come very close. It came in the old factory 40X wood stock. I switched to a McMillan, leaded it to 11lbs, and had it painted by a guy who painted guitars. Turned out so perfect I didn't want to bang it up and switched over to that green Win. Marksman pattern stock. Braked. Scope is a long-discontinued B&L 12-32. IMG_0877.jpeg
