Lets see those hunting rifles

View attachment 1168834 Here’s one of my coyote rigs. Typically used in open country where 300 yard and beyond shots are the norm.

22-250AI
Brux Barrel 8 twist finished at 20”
Rem 700 action
McMillan Game Warden edge stock
Leupold VX6 3-18x44
Shilen trigger
75 Berger at 3250

Love this rifle and it shoots great. This was the first winter for it and it claimed kills at 614 and 619, both on bedded coyotes.
Fun rifle!

Boy oh boy, does that look fun! Suppressors are far to evil up here in the Great White North. sigh.

View attachment 1169089 Here is mine. An A prefix rem 700 264 win mag with a 27 3/4" bartlien 8 twist 5r. It has a Leupold vx5hd and sits in a b&c composite stock.
Never killed anything but time and paper with it. I put it together for a Wyoming mule deer hunt and came up empty handed.

That is a very nice rig, something like I hope to have someday. I know there are much better optics out there, but for whatever reason I want a VX5 in the worst way!

IMG_0837.jpeg IMG_0836.jpeg Not really "hunting", because the hunting we do is looking for a bunch of targets then shooting them from the truck. But it's light enough to be a walkaround. The barrel came from one of the forums with brake installed, chambered for a benchrest 22BR derivative....14TW, believe it's a Hart. Now 22-3/4" and rechambered .221 for a small Sako action. It sat for many years before I got around to opening the barrel channel. Finally just finished it. Pretty thing, hope it shoots.

Another one and not a hunting gun. This was built years ago by Greg Tannell and I'm just now starting to fool with it. A 6mmAI with AckleymanII's 0 freebore reamer, 30"Kreiger, 13 or 14" twist. This is for rockchucks and 70/75gr bullets at over 4000. It 's a beast of a thing at 22.8lbs, definitely not for walkaround or even in and out of the truck very often. We'll see how it works..IMG_0843.jpeg

At 9+lbs this one could be a walkaround I guess. It's a junkyard dog - new Rem. 223 /12twist take off barrel from the gunshow, $75; old 722 action with altered bolt handle, from a pawnshop 25yrs ago, in a well-used Rem. classic stock also from long ago gunshow, unbedded. It was ridiculously easy to figure out what load. I ran only these groups to see what was what and got a pleasant surprise. It hates TNT's but loves the 50BT, and is very fast. It'll be a small critter gun using the 26.5gr load. I shoot at 6500' elevation.IMG_0789 2.jpeg IMG_0846.jpeg

DBLNUT,take this from a father of 4 boys and a bunch of Gkids;

Don't just "save" those kinds of pictures on a computer. Go get shots like these printed, and put into a,dosen't have to be expensive, frame. Makes a grand parent grin from ear to ear as a B'day or Christmas present.

The smiles say it all. Thanks for sharing.

I don't have too many lighter guns that you'd call "hunting" rifles but here's one. Rem. 722 action with 700 bolt, and tang modified for 700 trigger/stock. Lilja 24" barrel, 14 twist, 22-250AI, .255"(no turn) neck, 0 freebore. Burris FFII 4.5-14. IMG_0853.jpeg

A matched set.
Upper rifle - Schneider 25", 14" twist barrel, .223AI /.250NK, 0 freebore. H-S stock, 6-24 Pentax scope.
Lower rifle - Schneider 25", 12 twist barrel, 6-250 /.270"NK, 0 freebore, H-S stock, 6-24 Burris Signature scope.
Both have Rem. varmint contour barrels, handle well and are pleasant to shoot.

A couple 22-250AI. For prairie dogs and rockchucks.

Upper gun - 25" Lothar Walther barrel, 14" twist, .255"NK 0 freebore. Sako varmint pattern stock. That Walther is an awesome barrel. After 90rds of 50's @ 4100, there'll be one patch with a trace of blue, then nothing. It just doesn't copper foul. And after about 1500rds the throat had only about .005" wear. Scope is Burris Signature 8-32. I shoot 50's with Reloder15, best fireforming load is doing 4100+, best with with formed cases 4200. Brass is the very tough - unfortunately no longer available - PMC. I shoot at 6500' elevation.

Lower gun - Much heavier 28" Hart, 14" twist, .250"NK 9 freebore. Win. marksman stock. Also with 50's and Reloder15, best load is at 4246. Scope Pentax 8-32.

Both guns have identical accuracy. These brakes are really effective. Both have negligible muzzle jump, especially the lower gun. And even cranked up to 32x it's easy to see the whole show.

These were done by Greg Tannell. I wanted two identical guns to compare .223AI and .22-204. They'll be used on pd's and groundsquirrels. Both guns have Krieger 28" barrels same contour, same 14" twist, have bottom metal but use loading blocks. They'll be shooting 50/55 gr. bullets.
Upper gun - .223AI, .250"NK / 0 freebore, PPG bolt.
Lower gun - .22-204, .250NK./ 0 freebore. Unfortunately my 22-204 reamer was cut improperly and is too tight in the web, Win. 204 brass will not chamber. We're waiting on another reamer.

Both guns have B&L Elite 4000 6-24 scopes.

I've shot the upper gun quite a lot with a #7 Shilen .223 barrel and off bags or a rest it just barely quivers when you fire it. With that brake and barrel weight it's just a pleasure to shoot, you can hardly even feel it go off. I'm thinking they should both perform pretty much the same but with the 22-204 having a slight(?) edge in velocity.
