Lets see those hunting rifles

I really like the McMillan game warden. I asked Kelly if he would make a version with a maximum height cheek. Here it is, the McMillan game warden Max.

Do you by chance know how much this one is raised over standard height?

I often seem to struggle with cheek height and I hate having to lift up off a stock at all to get a full ocular view through the scope. Adj. cheek pieces correct this but they also add cost and a fair amount of weight too. It would be nice if they allowed you to spec different heights when you ordered them.

It's as high as you can go before the cocking piece would hit it.

My A5's with adj cheek have a slot milled in them so I don't have to mess with the cheek piece to pull the bolt from the action. It kind of becomes a PITA when you have to lower it every time you want to pull the bolt out of the action.

My 6CM has a MCM Varmint model on it and for me it's just barely high enough, I wouldn't mind it being a bit higher.

But I also dont like hard cheek contact, just a light touch.

Yeah, my cheek-welder buddies just shake their heads, and can't figure out how I can hit anything. I don't know if this is the NXS I got from you or another one, Alex, but I want the "floating eye" so long as I'm not shooting prone, which means "all the time." :)

Some incredible pieces on display here! Here's one of mine, it's all stock but it means the most to me as it was a gift from my Dad years ago. Tikka M65 Deluxe - 7RM, heavy Tikka rings with a Leupold VXL 4.5-14 (I think).

This pic was from December, my first cow elk hunt and the first time my Dad and I hunted together. It was a great trip with success late on day 2.

This gun started a bit of an obsession in me, I love the old Tikkas, particularly the deluxe versions, and have been seeking them out ever since. Have a nice little collection of them now.

Well, I sold my last 300 Norma Improved and build another a little lighter. I have not had time to start tuning yet, but I will probably start a thread on the tuning process.

Bix n Andy tac sport trigger
Mcmillan Game Warden MAX stock
#5 Krieger fluted 25" 9tw 4 groove

Alex, shoot me a PM as to cost and action nedded to build 1 of these. I've got a buddy that's wanting a 300 norma.
I've convinced him he cant use a Remington magnum action, and that its gonna take some creativity with Top Ramen at dinner to put it together.

Opinions vary but after seeing lug impressions in lug seats and measuring set back on, I only use the Bat HR actions for these builds currently. Borden has one almost done that will also fit the bill when finished. That one will be a little more budget friendly, but top quality. You hear quite a few guys say they dont want to build them on a 700, some of the customs have even smaller lugs than a 700. To each his own but I wont use them for this case head.

Whats the pros and cons having adjustable cheek piece on our hunting rifle

This is an excellent question sir. For me I like to get my head and eye aligned with the scope. I believe that for a rifle with a high probability of having to be shot quickly and off hand the less reaching and/or adjusting you have to do with your hold and sight picture {whether scoped or not} the better off you are the better the chances of a successful shot on game.
In short, the more you can make the rifle "fit" you consistently the better it will hold and hit. I really don't know of any disadvantages to having this in a hunting rifle except maybe looks. There are some really beautiful wood stocks {i.e., a nice shadow line cheek piece} that would not be the same if someone band sawed off a slice and made it adjustable.

22-250AI
Brux Barrel 8 twist finished at 20”
Rem 700 action
McMillan Game Warden edge stock
Leupold VX6 3-18x44
Shilen trigger
75 Berger at 3250

Love this rifle and it shoots great. This was the first winter for it and it claimed kills at 614 and 619, both on bedded coyotes.
Fun rifle!

My McM A5 adj stock does have the milled slot but it can be up pretty high when the bolt is thrown back all the way. I'm with Alex on the adjustable knob being in the way and loosening while on a hunt. I purchased this stock for a Stiller Lapua action new but from a seller that didn't use it. Inletted from the factory for the Stiller TAC338 action. Got a smoking deal on it so had to buy it. I replaced the knob with a flush Allen nut that virtually is flush with the cheek piece. I keep the Allen wrench in my pack for adjustment if needed. Never comes loose now and isn't hanging up on anything. Still a mechanical item that can and may cause issues in the field. Not a good option for hunting.

So here are two interesting project rifles. Top is just finished, a lightweight sporter 7 RSAUM on a model Seven, PTG bolt, b&c stock, TT trigger and a very good Heym factory barrel. Blueprinted the action opening it up enough to machine a bushing with metric internal thread and external fitted to the oversized action threads. Put a clearance 2-10 Bushnell 4500 scope on it.

The lower one is a rebarreled Howa Mini with light Brux in 6.5 Grendel and I decided to make a stock for it. Currently inletted and waiting for bdl style bottom metal before I start shaping.

Oh, the VERY top is a 45 cal custom mzzlldr built by my uncle in the early 70’s.

My current flame, 84M in 257 Bob. Really needs a 2-7 compact but given my track record the rifle will be sold or traded before deer season anyway

KIMG0113.JPG

This was the only 5 rounds I've fired thru it so far. Mounted an old Leupold 3-9 and loaded up with a ballpark charge of RS Hunter and 100 gr NBT

That there is a classic little deer rifle. What’s the weight on it? I’d keep it around to hunt with.
