ladder test opinion part 2

IMG_0557.JPG so after suggestions to re do ladder test with once fired brass, i did. i also switched up and went with RL33 and 150 gr smk's in my 6.5 SAUM 24" PROOF CARBON barrel

although i thought it went well, there was a bit of wind and not sure why the first shot was so low. i had already shot about 6 rounds to find zero at that range (at another target)

i can't really see a definite pattern, would appreciate constructive criticism as alway. i didn't call any shots, every shot was a suprise break and i felt on target. ( there is no sling stuf on this stock)

prone with atlas bipod, rear bag, midway shooting mat, beautiful day, in the shade, on concrete, with labradar , cooling rifle off every 3 rds

get you and your holding skills out of the equation.
get on a bench with a solid front rest.
waiting between the 3 and 4 shot means the bbl condition is not the same on every 4th shot.
shoot 1-3 foulers, then shoot your string in fixed intervals//like one min.

thanks retired, i shot about 6-7 shots prior to test. and i was not holding, i set the windage at .5L and left it there. as well as the elevation, i left it at (forget number)

i will try the front rest, perhaps it's time, i never had great luck doing that but it has been a while.

i will try that other thing too.

2-3 & 10-11-12 look tight. I'd pick 10 as my load if you twisted my arm. Your velocities look all over the map, how are you measuring your charges?

with a fx120i auto trickler/thrower set up. the first 5 shots i did were all loaded at 54.5,, they were just a warm up/find target type of thing cause of the new load and all.
1. 2808
2. 2814
32816
4. 2808 and i was really happy with that until the 5th shot
5. 2846 out of nowhere.

10, 11, 12 shows around 0.2moa vertical and 0.5moa group which is quite good at 500yd off a bipod. Scale up there and see if the screwy velocities with those shots become more consistent.

If he's shouldering the rifle on a bench with a solid rest to shoot it, he and his holding skills are still in the equation.

For years, many folks have shot smaller groups from prone with the rifle on bags. F class discipline spun off from such tests. I always shot better groups that way then any shouldered rifle way from a bench.

yes
and a proper rear bag...my error
if you are testing AMMO, take out as many variables as possible.

I am lost , can someone explain what this test is showing... Would you be better firing say 3 shots per load instead of one..? I also don't see the connection exept 10 11 12....

do a search outside of here on 'ladder testing"
it is designed to help find nodes/sweet spots.
doing it in high wind is not a good idea
doing it prone is not a good idea , average person is not good enough
and too many people on these forums do not know what a ladder is, not how to use it.

last but not least is 3 shot groups are used after a ladder, or in place, but tend to cost more powder and bullets.

First you need a proven powder charge, a barometer.3 shot groups @100. Start on the jam+5 seating depth and back off in increments of .005 going to as much as .020 off. If that doesn't work go .040 off. Some guns like the jam plus( Pushing the bullet back when engaged in the rifling) and some like it .012 -.015 off. Thats the fine tuning part. One target will jump out at you. Do this on a day with very lite wind and coming from the same direction. Then play with the powder. If you get a SMALL VERTICAL group thats the powder charge.
Good Luck

like i said most people do not understand what a ladder is for.
cat said start with a proven charge...bs
you find a charge with a ladder
ask yourself , where do you find a PROVEN charge for YOUR GUN ?
answer: by doing a ladder or a bunch of 3 shot groups.
cat had a nice tuning plan, but no plan to find the "proven charge" just skipped right by that.

Thanks....

I did address the powder charge. Read it again
