Ladder Test Target Examination

I was preforming an Audette Ladder Test this afternoon, and wondered what others would conclude from this target.

Mostly what I was interested in, those of you that ignore the horizontal deviation due to wind being a factor. (I was shooting in 5mph 9:00 gusts; (trying to shoot when calm.))

I went with 48.6grs.

I found shot 1 interesting... it has the same deviation as shots 5, and 8 in the ladder test target.

It seems as if I could possibly get a load at shot 6's charge weight, as well as shot 9; that is if I ignore the horizontal deviation.

Seems a little erratic. What kind of rifle? Looks like you may have a bedding issue? Ladders work with accurate rifles, but those groups are kind of large for 200 yd.s.

I would shoot any ladder test at 600+ yards.

I would load up 3 bullets on each charge weight and shoot them on 3 different outings in good conditions.

That way you can see a pattern or consistency forming in the results.

I mainly look for minimal verticle dispersion between 3-4 consecutive charge weights.

I have done this with f-class 284s and based only on verticle dispersion came up with loads that easily held x ring verticle at 1000 yards.

shooting at 200 yards isn't going to show definitive load induced verticle.

Yeah, I should have shot them at 300, which is as far as my range has sunlight in the summer.

Instead of using fmj bullets, maybe the 165 spire point which shoots exceptionable in the 30-06.

Help me wrap my head around that.
Irregardless of distance fired a bullet hitting a target is always at the bottom of its arc. Thats what my head says anyway ;D
Granted, further yardages require greater arcs but I fail to see how that negates rule #1

Personally I've always written off any high velocity round printing lower as the bullet leaving the bore sooner during the recoil cycle.
Thats just me. Absolutely no science to back that up.

I've shot 100's of Audettes at 200 yds. Seems to work for me.

You need something to help you read the wind. Sticks with surveyors tape will work well enough.
Bullets kicked around by the wind rarely just veer off at 90 degrees. At least not at the hilly ranges I shoot at.
Judging by your bullet choice I'd say your not trying to set the 1000yd shooting scene on fire just learning the ins and outs or rifle accuracy.

According to Hodgen you left roughly half of the Audette unfired. My quess is your reading Sierra data, maybe Hornady?
Hodgen has that bullet weight (not that particular bullet) traveling up to 2975 fps with up to 51gns of Varget.
Totally your choice which data to use. I'm not advocating anything here. Its up to the reloader to understand thier rifle and its limits.
Not to mention the effects changing components can play (IE the bullet)
Personally I always check multiple resources for my data and generally tend to beleive the specific powder manufacturers data. Thats just me.

There may be an accuracy node even higher. You may find horrible accuracy higher up. It works both ways.

Like you said, I'm "not trying to set the 1000yd shooting scene on fire;" this bullet goes the length of my range at these velocities just fine.

All I want is to, practice, practice, practice; in the summer 400 yards max; 600 yards in the winter.

It does what I want it to.
