Ladder test opinion

This is only my perspective. As always I am no expert. :)
Target number one I would re shoot 2-8 on a calm day.
Target number two I would re shoot 3-6 on a calm day.

Somewhere in those numbers are what I would probably settle on a load.

Take one piece of brass. Load and fire it 3 times. Compare this to your new brass. How much brass will expand depends on how your chamber is cut. You could be lucky and have minimal expansion.

ok, it has been fired twice now and it is still the same measurement, usually the new stuff measures 2.7820-30,,,the twice fired stuff measures 2.7830, i measured about 5 out of the 80 or so twice fired. i will measure them all soon but 5 is a good enough sample for now.

measured 78 pieces of my 2x fired brass, it's weird, hasn't hardly moved at all. brand new it is 2.7820 (ish like 2.7815 thru 2.7830) however out of my 78 pieces, 76 were all 2.7825-35 and 2 of them were 2.7840, which still fit in the chamber fine, now i haven't measured the web or shoulders but i full length size so it should be the same after each sizing i would assume.

I have found it depends on how your chamber was cut and the head space. On my old 28 Nosler virgin brass was about .006 shorter than fired. There was a velocity difference and it wasn’t the same accuracy as fired. In my new 30/28, the length from fired to virgin is the same. Nosler has some very long brass for 28 Nosler. I have found these loads to be very consistent with virgin and fired.

I assume the above measurements are from the base to the shoulder datum. Did you de-prime before measuring? If not, that will affect your measurements. If your longest measurement was 2.784" then your chamber is at least that long. If it were me, I would set my full length die to size the neck on the 2.784 pieces without touching the shoulder and use that setting until the fired brass is difficult to re-chamber. Measure the brass then and set the die to move the shoulders back .002"

take a pc of tape and put on the back of a new brass, the thin type wrapping tape, if the case will chamber add a 2nd pc of tape if it doesn't chamber then you have a tight or short chamber this is good that means min sizing I think, that's what I strive for when I headspace, but I could be wrong also my cookies r jumbled lol

yes i did de prime first so the measurement should be pretty spot on,,, yes, it was the usual base to shoulder datum with the hornady set up. thanks,

hi steve,,, that's funny, i did do that with scotch tape. the second piece made it hard, bolt wouldn't go down, i probably could have jammed it down.. the tape measured about .002.

sounds like you just have a tight chamber all is good, so you now know where to size basically not much at all maybe .002 and your good
