I need a 6XC schooling.....

Ive read on it... i want yalls info from experiance.... I just started the process of trying to get in more barrels tonight and one of these im planning on a 6XC... 1:8 twist,

lapua 22-250 brass, norma or nosler brass?

For some reason i think i heard some kind of issues with certain brass and this chamber???

Opinions?

I use Norma Brass. I have had no problems with Norma..I use the 105 Hunting VLD's in a 26" 1-8 twist.
I have shot H4350 that has shot well but the velocity was slow in my barrel, chamber combo..I been using RL17 with the norma brass,105 Hunting VLD . MV 3,150 FPS shoots great and even wacked a few whitetails with it.
so I guess it depends on what you want to do but don't overlook the 105 Hunting VLD or as I see them the original 105 VLD...530 BC..

Im fairly certain ill shoot the 105s... dtacs cant be found anywhere near me... and i like being able to use 105 hunting bullets and 105 target bullets... they both always shoot perfect for me in other rifles so i can paper punch or hunt.... probably doesnt matter anyways but i like the option...

plus target bullets work amazing for head shots on game... no mess...

You will like the 6XC. Its a nice round. Easy to load and very accurate. Go with the Norma brass, when I had mine it wasn't available yet and I used Tubbs brass. I kept mine just over 3000fps and it was a hammer and easy on brass. I decided to step up to the 115s but the XC with Tubbs brass would build to much pressure trying to get the velocity that I was wanting so I re chambered it to a 243SLR and I have been really happy with it too. You just can't really go wrong with any of the popular 6MMs in my opinion.

Try here for the DTACs. They are in stock

What powders is everyone using for the berger 105s in this caliber? Or what are the top powders for this round?

H4350 and H4831SC for both the Bergers and DTACs. Might also want to think about a 1:7.5 twist barrel instead of the 1:8

1-8 twist will work well for bullets up to 105gr, for 155gr bullets 1-7.5 is needed (for Bergers at least, not sure about d-tacs)
I have had pretty good luck with H4350, but other powders that others have listing in that range of burn rate can work well to.
I am just loading my first batch of rounds using Norma 6XC brass, as it is extremely hard to find here in Canada, I think I may have just purchased the last 150 cases anywhere.
Before that, I have been using Lapua 22-250 brass, which from what I have read isn't the easiest brass to use for fire-forming, but I had no issues whatsoever. One of the "issues" with Lapua brass is it will leave a donut inside the neck where it turns to the shoulder, many shooters leave this donut there, as long as you don't try to seat a bullet deep enough to contact it. I simply ran a reamer inside the necks after fire-forming and removed it. The brass worked great for many firings. It is Lapua brass, and the quality is excellent.
So far I have only used Berger 105 Hybrids and Lapua 105 Scenar L's for target work, and I currently have Berger VLD Hunting and Hornady 87gr V-Max bullets loaded for hunting, which shoot great, although I have yet to take any game with them.

You will love the 6XC, it's easy to load for, light recoiling and when your loads come together for your rifle, it is supper accurate.

Tricky brass was the first couple of batches available from David Tubb, the guy who invented this cartridge. Norma factory stuff is the best available, when you can find it. Any of the 22-250 offerings will work as will 6.5 Creedmoor.

I've even made some up from Lapua's excellent Palma brass so as to use small rifle primers. BUT it's a lot of work to accomplish this.

Were I where you're at, and in light of what Brian Litz now suggests is good practice for best stability and optimum bullet BC I'd order 1:7.5 twist barrels. I have a 1:7.8 I've had since 2008 but went with two new 1:7.5's on a couple of other actions; neither have been chambered or fitted as yet but that's where I'm at....

I went ahead and ordered the 7.5 twist instead of the 8 twist for this barrel the other day after reading more... hopefully it will work for 105s a little better...

I shot JLK 105 VLD's in a 1:8 Schneider 26" & didn't find the results very satisfying. In a PacNor 1:7.5 I used DTAC 115's with great results (Berger's 115 was an unmitigated disaster but I was younger then & not nearly as experienced), same with 107SMK's & Berger 105VLD's. The latter are my 'go to' bullet in 6XC (also 6HAGAR for 600 yards in a spacegun); I think 1:7.5 is optimum for them despite my excellent history with 'em in a 1:7.8.

Berger's 105BT ought to work fine in either, the 105 Hybrids seem to benefit from the faster twist.

Once I get one or both of the 1:7.5 blanks I have chambered I might revisit the JLK105VLD just for grins, see how they work compared to the two Berger 105's I currently have on hand: VLD & Hybrid.

I think you made the right choice....

thanks for the reassurance! I hope so... i read more on it and i thought man that 7.5 should work a little better than an 8 twist... ive been sitting here fingers crossed...

When forming from 22-250 be aware 22-250 brass is sized a few thou smaller at the base diameter than the Norma 6XC, which uses a 308 base diameter. So if you fire form 22-250 brass in a full Norma 6XC chamber you get a bit of a bulge about .150" from the base.

If you are planning on using 22-250 brass exclusively you may want to have the chamber cut with a 6XC reamer with a 22-250 base diameter.

BOOM!!!! This is the kinda shit i need to know!!! Thanks!

I'm not sure it hurts anything or not but its kinda ugly. SAAMI max cartridge for 22-250/250 Savage is .4668" at the base, 243/308 family is .4703", and all the Norma headstamp 6XC brass I ever bought, and the dies size to .470ish, 22-250 brass starts out at .466ish. So that little section around the case head never touches the chamber even after multiple firings, leaves a little 'line' or 'bulge'.

GOOD GOOD info!!! I sure appreciate that. That must be why everyone was saying NORMA NORMA NORMA! I'm still a little ways out... The money order for the barrels was just sent out today, so ita be next week probably until barrels may arrive at the smith, then a week or so to get them chambered and threaded... I still have a few weeks before I need to start ordering brass, and die sets... This gun stuff is no cheap hobby...
