Home Made Hand Sanitizer or as we call it case lube.

Looked up effectiveness of sanitizers today. Covid-19 has a coating that Alcohol 70% or over dissolves. Kills the virus. So that case lube should do the trick.

Uh, no... not unless they're taking showers in their 'shine.

Their breath will kill the covid many feet away.

My relatives (many years ago) used to bring (smuggle... I mean,.. sneak into the coutry) bottles of Spirytus from Europe. They'd scratch from the label the alcohol % and have a few bottles in each luggage.
That stuff at 95-96% ( 190 proof ) killed oxygen. Take a swig and try to breath, but no oxygen gets passed the mouth.

Yep. Isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) or denatured alcohol (available at most hardware stores for about $16/gallon) are quite effective as disinfectants for this stuff. 60%'s enough, 70 or 75% ought to be better.

Add some lanolin or aloe vera gel to keep them from drying out your skin from frequent use.

DON'T SMOKE when your hands are wet with this stuff! Both are flammable.

For surfaces, laundry bleach (usually 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution) works OK but read on.

Common hydrogen peroxide appears to work even better. The brown-bottle stuff is 3% solution so diluting it 1:5 with water gets you 0.5% dilution. Adding alcohol increases the disinfecting power.

DO NOT ADD HYDROGEN PEROXIDE TO BLEACH
!

I'm trying to make sure my "antifreeze" ratio is in the proper range to kill just about any germ that gets within the 6' social distancing limits. Wife has hidden my car keys tho. o_O

I these odd times i wanted to pass along some information.
If anyone is using the the home made case lube (99% alcohol and lanolin)it also makes a fine hand sanitizer and the lanolin keeps the hands soft!
Be safe and God bless/
It's my recipe for case lube and kinda considered it for hand sanitizer as well but instead use aloe vera with the alcohol. Not sure if it makes a difference but that's what I've been using. The lanolin is cheaper and probably easier to find in guessing.

There is a reason 70% is used for sanitizing. 99% is not better than 70% at killing stuff, 70% is. Water is an important ingredient if you are trying to kill things with the mix. Labs everywhere take 99% ETOH and dilute it to 70% for a reason. Google is (sometimes) your friend.

I think I have it covered.... at the time I ordered the hand sanitizer, I believe I was practicing my CCP virus decontamination measures and hit the wrong button:D

Careful with the Hardware store stuff read the label if it contains Naphtha stay away from it. Ask me how I know...LOL

True enough but sometimes even the label doesn’t tell you what’all’s inside. For the stuff I buy I had to look up the MSDS sheet & even then it’s not a certainty there’s nothing but ethyl & methyl alcohol in it:

Only reason I know of for adding naptha would be if used for making shellac from flakes. Naptha’s commonly used to slow down how denatured alcohol evaporates if you’re using shellac when “french polishing” woodwork.

If you know of another reason I’d love to hear what that might be!

I bought two gallons of 7% H2O2. I already had a gallon of 90% Isopropanol.

Cut a roll of paper towels off to fit a plastic Folgers can, Cut a small hole and some relieve cuts in the top, and you’re in business

Seriously (for me;)), I have liquid lanolin. What is the best alcohol to mix it with (I’m guessing that one would want to have as little water in it as possible) and where can I find it? I have 95% alcohol that I purchased of the shelf at Walmart. FYI: I’m wanting to use this for reloading lube. Thanks!
