Hmm 7mm-08?!

Ok ,
So heres my dilemma.
I have multiple 243 Win, 223 and 6mmbr. I recently got another remington 700 action and dont know what caliber rifle i want to build. I want to use it for PRS as I have hunting fclass and benchrest guns. Also would like decent barrel life so i dont have to rebarrel every year.

So i have narrowed it down to either 7mm08 or 6.5x47 lapua.
Heres the catch if I get the 7mm08 i can also take it elk hunting but i can also borrow one of my dads 7mm Remington Mags.

So with all of that said my question is how much does the 7mm08 give up to the 6.5x47?
Why is no one using the 7mm08 in prs ?

The 6.5's have a little bit better ballistics. But there's no fleas on the 7/08. It's a damn fine and accurate cartridge!

Sounds good, all except the elk hunting part, stick with dads 7 rem mag. There is a reason he got the 7 rem mag.

Go 6.5x47. Work a load up with these and use it for both hunting and tactical comps.

I love my 7mm08s, but for what your asking, I'd build the 6.5x47 Lapua for prs and borrow the 7 mag for elk.

Bill, I have friends that went down that road for PRS. They all now shoot either 6mm or 6.5mm of some sort.

The 7mm08 has a little more recoil, drop, and drift. A great deer round, but I would also go with the 6.5 for PRS

If you look at the 1000 yard benchrest records.....6mm is king
If you look at 1000 yard F-class......... 7mm is king.... @midrange the 6's hold their own no question.
If it where me, I would go the 7-08 route, I would most likely Ackely Improve it........ a couple of Lads from down under have spent a great deal of time writing abou their work on this forum with the 7-08. @Quickoz @plumbs7

I believe around 2700 FPS with the 180's is their happy place.

Besides, a 7mm 175 Partition driven near 2700 is an elk killing machine.

For a hunting rifle I'd be all about the 7-08. (in fact it's my favorite in my locker). I would not bother with the AI route. You get something like 3% improved case capacity on a 308 based case. Yea, you get a 30* shoulder, but that isn't really buying you anything in a hunting rifle.

Mine will launch 140 Accubonds or 140 SGKs at 2900+ at loads that aren't testing anything. How much deader will a deer be with another 75FPS? The 140 is a middle of the weight class bullet for the 7mm, going down to a 6.5 it becomes the heaviest bullet you can shoot. The 7 gives you more options for more down range energy.

If your main purpose is PRS type shooting then you'll be better served with the 6.5 or a 6 of some flavor. You don't need down range energy, you need good ballistics and low recoil so you can see where your misses landed so you can correct.

My choice for a PRS rifle was to build a 6SLR, but the 6.5x47 is a great round, as is the 6x47 if you decide to go with a 6.
